On July 20th, journalist Kim Bum Tae covered the controversy surrounding JYJ and KBS on Radio 21’s ‘Lee Ki Ho’s Polyscope‘.
The segment began with an interview of Kim, who has been reporting on JYJ’s case for some time now. Kim stated, “For the ‘N7W‘, JYJ has sung logo songs and created self-produced videos to bring in votes from both Korea and overseas. Not even a day after these were released, the boys brought in hundreds of thousands of views. Jeju Island was in desperate need of international votes compared to the cities it was competing against, and through JYJ’s promotions, the island was able to garner the attention it needed. Under the suggestion of JYJ, both Korean and international fans voted for Jeju Island, bringing in effective help.”
Kim continued, “Fans are currently lodging complaints that they and JYJ’s popularity were used to bring in votes for Jeju Island. Not only KBS, but the entire Korean broadcast industry has become a laughing stock because of this one cancellation.”
On KBS claiming that SNSD and f(x) were more effective, Kim stated, “The decision on bringing in certain artists is at the sole discretion of the broadcast network and the producer. Still, logically, there is a ‘limit’ that shouldn’t be crossed. To tell the singers that worked as honorary ambassadors that their appearance has been canceled randomly one day is not just tyranny but akin to violence.”
The reporter was then asked what ‘So Tam Je Shil’ was, a new word that was created regarding the entire issue. Kim explained, “It stands for, ‘desiring SNSD and losing JYJ.’ Blind to the immediate profits, they lost what was more important and immaturely broke their loyalty.”
On SM Entertainment artists always being added in the place of JYJ, the reporter bravely mentioned that rumors of ‘external pressure’ was circulating within the broadcast industry.
Kim also asked fans to take a bigger interest in such issues by explaining, “Broadcast networks will be more heated in ‘catering to the stars’. There’s a possibility that the influence of the label will rise, and broadcast networks will have to cater to that influence. More than anything, the public and political circles need to take an interest to eradicate such unfair actions in the industry.”
Closing his segment, the reporter said, “I am not defending JYJ or pleading in their defense. What I’m saying is that we need to take a listen to the voices of those that are being sacrificed under unjust practices in unjust environments, whether they’re celebrities or laborers.”
The reporter went on to introduce a tweet that a foreign fan had said, “It’s upsetting that Korean broadcast networks still don’t have an open heart. Do they not know that JYJ’s activities are all for the benefit of Korea?” He responded to the tweet by warmly replying, “There are more people quietly resisting, supporting, watching over, and supporting JYJ than what they know, see, and hear.”
JYJ is currently preparing for a new album release as well as another tour in the second half of 2011. The department head of Prain, Lee Jae Eun, revealed, “They’re a worldwide group with a large scale, so we’re looking at the overall picture for the second half. It hasn’t been that long since they completed their world tour so we were going to have a moment of rest, but there are a lot of love calls from Europe and the Americas being received. As such, we will be going straight back into preparations.”
Lee continued, “JYJ has a special emotional attachment to their fans and are proud of their fans than anyone else. With everything they say, they always refer to their fans as ‘our fans’ and I think that with every obstacle they overcome together, that bond grows stronger than ever. We’re glad that they have fans that love their music and their dreams, and we hope that they aren’t too upset with this issue.”
Lee concluded, “Not only their fans, but the citizens of Jeju Island and the public have all lent their support after this issue erupted. There’s a side where I’m grateful because it raised awareness about the injustice JYJ is fighting against. This issue has nothing to do with JYJ’s efforts in promoting Jeju, and as world stars, they will be doing their best to let the world know about Korea’s beautiful island.”

he’s totally right. I couldn’t agree more. I LOVE JYJ+HoMin…
JYJ FIGHTING!GOD IS WITH YOU!
I have a question ..
Is snsd and fx really more popular than jyj in Korean population eyes ?
For me it doesn’t make sense .. Like seriously .. I noticed that Korean media always make it seem like something big .. Also about Korean idols being toooooo popular in japan .. Do some Koreans believe this ? Coz I’ve seen international fans of these idol groups believing this .. Some of them even says shinee , suju , snsd are more popular than tohoshinki(5)(2)and jyj .. So they believe everything korean media reports
it’s not that snsd and fx are more popular, it’s just that SM has more money than other agencies to ADVERTISE them of “being” popular…get it? Although, i do think that snsd and fx all have potentials but i really do think that SM invest more money into advertisements than their own potentials and abilities…
one of my friend told me that one of her relatives involved in entertainment industry n her company usually worked with sme…. n she said, LSM really3 adore snsd…. thats why u can see sme treat snsd better than other idols sme have…
Last time i read in some articel DBSK5 is LSM favorit group he really3 adore them and now…?
I think he will say that to every group who can make more money for him,for SM they are just a tool to make more money, thank god JYJ already leave this company.
def not f(x).. snsd is known quite a lot just because they frequent every show on those major broadcasters. the difference is that dbsk is known for their singing, not variety show appearances, snsd, imo was created for entertainment purposes, so they have so many members and they’re spread out on several different shows esp in recent years and thus are shown more. that doesn’t mean they’re more popular though, the difference in fan club members show that.
@purpelavender i agree! because SM has moolah to throw ard, you are assaulted by snsd, suju, etc everywhere you turn. in that sense, snsd is more visible than jyj, and arguably a wider population is aware of snsd – they know *of* snsd, but whether they are fans (and how fanatic they are) is a separate matter altogether. on the other hand, jyj’s fandom has organised so many groundbreaking fan projects that we have more than sufficiently demonstrated the strength of our love for the boys. that, imo, makes all the difference.
who wants a million casual fans when you can have 500k hardcore, i’d-do-anything-for-jyj fans?
YES.
i could not say it better
@Megajaefan
” Some of them even says shinee , suju , snsd are more popular than tohoshinki(5)(2)and jyj .. So they believe everything korean media reports”
Where I come from, that is called ‘trash talk’. Saying it without anything to back it up, is just that – TRASH.
kpop fans in general just don’t know how to make a difference between paid promotion / advertisement on almost every tv channel / magazines and actual public recognition / genuine popularity. probably it’s mainly because of how media machine feeds them 24/7 when it comes to kpop, so they don’t have time to ‘think’ logically and/or reasonably like … erm, normal citizen? *shrug*
‘twisted’ fun as an real-life example for above? my jp friend, who doesn’t know any clue about kpop, visited a hmv music store (yes, that big store) in aikihabara. she noticed a catchy song because of its gibberish jp and asked nearby girls who were selecting CDs. Many tries of her resulting to ‘I don’t know who is the singer’ and then one girl suddenly said it’s snsd. The funny thing is: snsd’s posters are like everywhere in that area (from my friend’s photos she sent me) but when people there were curious about who snsd is, even after that girl said snsd sold like 400k copies (*this is just from my friend’s memory*), music buyers there still don’t know who they are. but when that said girl mentioned ‘snsd are friends with tohoshinki’, 3 or 4 other buyers were like ‘is that the group of jaejoong?’, and only after mentioning jaejoong, they would say ‘ah, i know’ =) =) =) (though my friend was only realizing this story, not any kpop group still because well, her music taste is not about idol)
and that’s taken place at where is considered even as kpop realm in tokyo
/everyday i shock, every night i shock XDDDDD
I agree and the story is so funny xD.. Jaejoong is totally the prince of japan everyone knows him even if they don’t know tohoshinki/jyj ..
I think snsd is known to the general public because they are everywhere while JYJ is banned in broadcast for 2 years now and the fact that their band name is also new. But to be known everywhere is not enough, the question is if those people who know you also follow you, admire you and appreciate your works eventually become your fan, and what kind of fan : a casual fan, an avid fan or to the extreme of a really die-hard fan.( I know Justin Beiber but I don’t care about his music or anything about him, I listen to Charice but I don’t buy her cd’s, I can say that i’m a Celine Dion fan but I have only a couple of cds of her and I don’t search about her life, I just listen to her music, but with JYJ, as much as possible I want to buy every material related to them and day-in day-out I visit JYJ3 to know what’s going on with their lives.) So there’s a scale from being known – popular – followed – idolized . Presently , in terms of “how many people know you” – snsd may have the higher number ; but in terms of “how many people followed and idolized you as @closet said ” i’d-do-anything-for-you” = JYJ wins.
yup thats what i feel about JYJ, to be JYJ fans i would do everythin to support them.
i visit JYJ3 4-5 hours everyday….
me too ,i love so many songs and not really like the singers who sing that songs but with tohoshinki and now JYJ it is totally different.i just love everything about them esp Jae
100% Agreed!
thank you mr Lee! i hope to see more and more reports on this issue and therfore more help for jyj to fight injustice, illegal, and impure practices that prevent them from doing what they love to do-sing and perform according to the desires of their hearts! cause, their hearts are pure and the music that bursts from them is likewise!
Wow..Allkpop actually posted this? There might be hope for the lost and blind after all *breaks into rendition of Amazing Grace*
On a sidenote, after a lot of in-depth research and perstering, I found out that the audience at the KBS special N7W event in Jeju barely numbered 700. Someone from a Korean JYJ online forum was able to get a photo:http://bbs3.telzone.daum.net/gaia/do/starzone/detail/read?articleId=10746600&objCate1=96&bbsId=S000001&searchKey=subjectNcontent&sortKey=depth&searchValue=JYJ+%ED%95%B4%EC%99%B8%ED%8C%AC+kbs&forceTalkro=T&pageIndex=1
According to this person, KBS had prepared helicopters, a film crew and staff of 200, live broadcasting in 72 countries and 2 HD camera equipment, but most of it was not put to use due to the low audience count. “No wonder KBS didn’t film any scenes of the audience during the entire show”
Hi Jimmie your presence is quite reassuring!
I hope though that this incident helps JYJ in the long run
The incident also made it onto other South east asian papers so it did get international exposure
jimmieeeeeeee….
lol kbs embarassing themselves…. i wish i can read this in news headline… hehehe
@Jimmie
“There might be hope for the lost and blind after all *breaks into rendition of Amazing Grace*”
You ALMOST made me loose my lunch! LOL!!
“According to this person, KBS had prepared helicopters, a film crew and staff of 200, live broadcasting in 72 countries and 2 HD camera equipment, but most of it was not put to use due to the low audience count. “No wonder KBS didn’t film any scenes of the audience during the entire show”
WOW, an audience of 700 for two female groups who are considered “more effective” than the chosen ambassadors. What is the world coming to I ask you? The flip side of all this, I bursting at the seams thinking about how mucy MONEY was wasted for this. The smirk on my face is getting bigger by the minute.
Whoever did the count is a microbiologist! lolz. I also count high population/colony plates on petri-dishes whenever i use SMA media.
Anyway, I’m so glad they had a low turn out.My anger is somewhat relieved… about 1/100 less.
Thanks for keeping us in SK’s opinion loop Jimmie! ^^
@jimmie
wow what a big preparation they’ve got there, if only JYJ did perform it will
not be wasted
though they didn’t show the audiences there are fancams
of snsd and f(x) performing with the entire audience
you really can see that its not a big crowd…
thanks a lot jimmie for your info
@Jimmie,how are you ?We missed you in here,Jimmie.I’m glad you ‘re still have time for us,thank you for always bring to us the good news,we need it ,we want to know everything over there …….Thank you ,love you..
@Jimmie
Wow. Should we be tipping those photos anywhere?
Muahahaha that’s a slap in the face .. Take that kbs .. You prepared alot and it’s all wasted for your so called popular snsd and fx
I’m listening to mission and I’m so happy hahaha
rotfl ur first sentence^^
hey jimmie thanks for popping by^^ 700 for two groups…burn. sorry for those girls that got drag into this. nonetheless, i am somewhat happy that kbs got bit in the butt when they saw how little audience was.
Wow! SNSD brought 700 people? Really a “good” choice! I bet JYJ can bring thousand of people! Your lost KBS
embrassing!
Thanks Jimmie,
Hope this fact would serve as a wake up call to KBS. JYJ and their LOYAL FAMILY won in this round. Shall i say that this is sweet vindication for JYJ and us, their fans
Let’s continue journeying with them and aim for the peak of the mountains we’re climbing. Hwaiting! Fightiing! Good morning everyone.
Thanks Jimmie,
everytime your name pops up, it seems an extra energy is added to JYJ’s fandom, please visit JYJ3 more often and take care.
hi. thank u so much for sharing this.
@Jimmie
Hello Jimmie, great to hear from you. Blind me, the site resembles more of a company family day rather than a national event.
“Kim continued, “Fans are currently lodging complaints that they and JYJ’s popularity were used to bring in votes for Jeju Island. Not only KBS, but the entire Korean broadcast industry has become a laughing stock because of this one cancellation.”
MUSIC TO MY EARS!
This is exactly what should be happening…becoming a laughingstock. When the young ones act more like the adults, how pathetic is that?
“He responded to the tweet by warmly replying, “There are more people quietly resisting, supporting, watching over, and supporting JYJ than what they know, see, and hear.”
I certainly hope this is the case. Because JYJ deserves better than what they have been receiving. Thank you Mr. Lee for continuing to follow the case.
Agreed! No longer necessary to leave my comment now that I’ve read this. =)
It has come from no one but us fans protest for their sake. but now seem like a whole society is raising their voice again the injustice they have to suffer
though I dont know if these things can ever touch to those thickest faces, but now at least more and more ppl not only in Korea but also international (thank to New7Wonders) know abt this, there will be more supporters, and of course more hope for JYJ and for us too
Be strong JYJFamily!!
Don’t those people know HOW MANY people love JYJ??? Still trying to fight against the current. Sad.
They are mentioning Europe!!! Did I see that well??!!! O_______O
I mean, yeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii *jumpsaround*
Oh please, I hope that the next World Tour includes Europe, please.
so the release of the new lbum is confirmed???
Can’t waaaaaaaait!!
And NEW WORLDTOR TOO!! YAaaaay!!
I love this article
hopefully more people will speak up like this reporter did. i hope the courts are seeing this too. injustice is too great.
i am happy for the new album and world tour, they mention america, so we see u soon right^^
ALL I saw was new album and a Second World tour towards the end of 2011 so…….SNSD and F(X) can kick rocks , the only reason their popular is because there advertisements are every where and they have this new “sexy” image their promoting. JYJ are artists that perform , sing, dance, compose and write their own music. Hands Down the best in my eyes.
hi watch this fan made
Really lovely, @jyj1214, thank you.
Beautiful…
I’ll spread this one.
Thank you, Thank you @jyj1214
“JYJ has a special emotional attachment to their fans and are proud of their fans than anyone else”
We, the fans are also extremely proud of JYJ. JYJ are our pride and joy.
We will protect and fight till the end against those who hurt them!!!
So evil people out there hear this : STOP BULLYING OUR BOYS COZ THE NEXT TIME
WE COME AFTER U, U’LL SCREAM FOR MERCY!!
We fans support JYJ come what may; always and forever.
