after watching it the MV for the nth time, trying to decipher the message of the song w/o knowing what the lyrics meant.. i thought it was about how initially, as idols, they had to conform to the image the society/management packaged them with. and eventually, he goes beyond that to become a performer who writes these awesome songs that the world couldn’t help falling in love with.

Junsu is blowing your minds by playing with your pre-concieved notions of not only his persona but also his music! He shocks the hee-be-gee-bees out of the fandom but USING Auto-tuning!
What a genius he is! Here is why…
Again.. Junsu has broken the fans EXPECTATION of what they think he should be doing in terms of HIS OWN MUSIC. .Junsu is telling us again… don’t box me in.
HERE IS MY KEY POINT >>>>Bottom line… We already know Junsu can sing! The whole of Asia knows the man can sing!!!. So Junsu again blows your mind by using auto-tuning knowing full well that in the world of K-pop the perception is that auto-tuning is for those we CAN’T sing….
The difference with Junsu is that he CHOOSES to use auto-tuning. It’s a CREATIVE CHOICE. Like an artist who paints on a canvas. He may choose a slim brush, a thick brush, wide brush, he may choose oil paints, water colors, he may spread the paint thin or thick. He may choose one color or many.. the point is it is his creative process and he chooses based on the visual the image he has in his mind and wants to convey.
I look at it this way. Kim Junsu is REDEFINING THE USE OF AUTO-TUNING. Showing how it can be and should be used as a CREATIVE TOOL to add TEXTURE to the music… BAM! Take that K-pop! Kim Junsu is EDUCATING you! Stand up and take notes please!
So I have no issues with the auto-tuning and those who may, this is about an artist and his own music creativity. This album is Junsu’s creation he is a musical artist… and for Junsu auto-tuning is just a tool like a paint brush to convey a sound within his musical canvas,
One last point..I invite those who are concerned about the auto tuning to listen to the song again and you will HEAR Junsu’s signature pure VOCALS all over this video its layered over the auto-tuning.. that’s genius in itself…

Well you certainly took a harmless comment up to a whole new level. umm just a question but aren’t you interpreting this a bit too much?
Firstly no i dont think everybody knows junsu can sing. except for the people who have been following him through the tvxq/jyj days. and now that jyj can’t perform im pretty sure the new kpop converts are pretty new to jyj. so yeah.. secondly its just that everybody knows autotune is created for the purpose of you know well tuning any note that just isn’t hit right. so junsu really cant change the meaning of auto tune ^^ but again we know junsu can never ever have a problem singing any note.. that’s just impossible.but again this was an answer to the interpretation.
now first i never ever said his voice sounds bad with auto tune because it doesn’t. the only thing here is he can sing. he doesn’t need auto tune ( but it does make the tarentallegra sound cool XD) Now if you show this to a person who is new to the kpop norm. they might enjoy the beginning but the instant they hear the auto tune they WILL be put off. and without even bothering to hear the rest ( or more songs) hey will just assume that he can’t sing. and that too because auto tune again is meant for the purpose of making bad singing sound better( again not saying anything about junsu i bet he can sing this song perfectly without auto tune too)

Wow this came out earlier than i expected, i can’t imagine watching this at the office :p There’s just so much going on in the MV i don’t know where to start, but at first listen, i’m sold! I love the beginning part of the song before the first tarantallegra chorus, him in the blue suit, the black and red suit, with his long side fringe, the dancers forming the web around him, the last part of him crouching down in the snow, True there’s quite a bit of autotune in the song, but i think it only brings out the flavour of the song, doesn’t diminish his vocals at all. I’ll love to see him perform this live, they should make a dance-only version of the mv. Anyone here thinks he sounds sexy singing the tarantallegra chorus? :p How am i going to sleep now…*goes back to watch the mv just one last time*

OMO I am so sorry…. I had so much to get done since I had been travelling for two weeks. I also though the MV would be out Sunday. I was going to return Monday…until my little niece sent me a text telling me the MV was out..
I nearly died… Seriously when I watched for the first 60 seconds I stood to me feet pumping my fists in the air and danced a victory dance. I WAS ELATED! OVER THE MOON! Kim Juns Had SCORED BIG TIME!

Yes this is a big step up from Intoxication… but the XIAHTOD influence is right there with the whole BODY LANGUAGE… the facial expressions… The way he looks right into the camera. Like he sees us watching him. He is having a conversation with the fandom and we are not even there. A lot of artists cannot do that.. look dead into a camera and see the audience and act as though they are performing on stage in front of a live audience… Junsu masterfully conveys that look. That is why this is so hypnotic in a way… You can really FEEL the man…

What did you think of the music itself? I was referring to this being in another league from Intoxication and Xiahtic – in terms of the background instrumentals, structure of the song, singing technique…It must be fiendishly difficult to come up with an addictive (yet not dumb) melody like that…kinda like what SM tries to do with songs like ‘Sorry Sorry’. I still find it so funny that one Kim Junsu is better than the whole SM combined. I mean, what the heck is ‘The Boys’ compared to such genius? *rolls eyes* Tarantallegra is definitely the best kpop dance track in my memory. It has so much to offer and there’s no way to escape it.
Su has come into his own, blossomed as an artist. With each breakthrough success, we can see him grow in confidence, depth and maturity at all levels – his music, his performance, his self-image. I’m very happy to see that he’s fully embraced himself as a charismatic, beautiful and sexy man, yes, just as much so as the next guy. He doesn’t have to be considered dowdy or physically unappealing anymore, because he is not! Did you ever feel that he struggled with that? Now he’s really taking care of his appearance, and we can see the results.

My opinion – exactly right. I was struck among other things by the ANGER he exuded in the video. There was beautiful energy too, but I’m sure now that there is a part of him that he wanted to express that is just seethingly angry at what has been happening to them when all they want to do is go their own way and make their own music. So why shouldn’t he do exactly what I was talking about yesterday – say to the rest of the K-Pop talented, “Hey, do you want to continue to be slaves or do you want to do what I did?”

I agree with you both. I was surprised when I read the lyrics actually..considering the title of the song LOL I guess I didn’t know what to expect. But I really like them a lot.
So bold. I love this side of Junsu. Now that he’s no longer under SM’s thumb, he gets to be an artist without comprising his expression. What it is he really wants and in a sense, needs to express. He gets to take on anything with no inhibitions. On his art, himself.

To me auto-tune says “Here I am singing something I can’t really sing.” But when you listen to that melody, of course Junsu CAN sing it, could have sung it and sung it well. So I guess it’s just an effect.
Well, if there is one thing that JYJ and JunSu can confidently use is autotune. Why, you may ask? Because their voices are absofreakinglutely amazing and using autotune for them is not to cover their lack of talent, but to experiences w/ new styles.

Again.. Junsu has broken the fans EXPECTATION of what they think he should be doing in terms of HIS OWN MUSIC. Fans and the public think of him as a ballad singer.. Why must he limit himself just to being a ballad singer?….Junsu is telling us again… and when will the fans HEAR what he is saying…. don’t box me in.
With this one song.. we are exposed to so much that is out of the norm for Junsu in terms of fans expectation that I can see why this is the Title Track…We get Rap from … gasp a guest artist…and auto-tune… ahhh why not? Just because he never did used it before does that mean he should not try it? He is experimenting, blending, HE IS CREATING, That’s what a true artist does they CREATE and experiment and out of it can come something truly unique and amazing..
See if you never step outside of the box you will never know what other possibilities await you. I respect your right to like or not like the type of music of your choice. I too am not a ‘huge’ fan of autotune music. But I respect each artist I like, to sing/compose whatever they want to. They certainly have the talent, I don’t. My comment was not directed to anyone person as you seem to feel it was. I read plenty of comments on YT, AKP to form my opinion about the discussion of autotune use in the song.
One of my favorite artists is Cher. She doesn’t have the best voice in the world, but she does have her style, and I like it. Several years ago when autotune first started to come into vogue, she released a single, “I Believe”, that was pure autotune. Because of her unique singing style, she managed to make it work. It was one of her biggest hits. I play the damn song on repeat so often sometimes because I can’t help myself. I didn’t moan and groan, I just appreciated the song the way it was. No one else has to follow my lead.
But here is a singer who can sing the pants off of most every other singer of his generation. The song uses a wonderful mix of layers to make it what it is. I just simply choose not to dismiss any or all parts. It all works for me. This is a dance song. It’s about the groove. I may be different from most folks, but when a dance song comes on, I want to dance. I don’t necessarily have to diagnose the song. I just get my groove on.
For those folks who would be so uninspired to listen to the whole song or the rest of the album, that’s their loss. But kpop did not invent the use of autotune. Sure they may be more abusers of the technique, but that does not mean every singer coming out of SK needs to rely on it. So, I wouldn’t worry about how many potential fans may or may not listen to Junsu because of the small autotune part in this song. Junsu is going to be fine.
Let’s keep talking to each other. Differences of opinons are just that, differences. PEACE.

I think there may actually be something amiss with that view count. It’s not moving.
when there’s a lot of trafik, it will stuck at 301 views, you know. just give it some times and it will eventually goes up to the actual numbers. and the likes already reach 13.000 not 4000

As I’ve studied about narrative, semiotics, and semantics…….I can really get Xia’s message of his first full solo album. It’s all conveyed in this MV…..no wonder Xia had chosen it as the main song and as the title of his album.
As we can see, there are many symbols in this MV……other than composing and arranging the song, I am sure that Xia chose every single detail by himself…..including the make-up, wardrobes, properties, dancers, cinematography, etc.
Xia indeed wants to reveal his unique and extraordinary sense of music, sense of dance, sense of acting, and sense of fashion.
In terms of music, Xia blends many elements of music, such as hip-hop, electric and techno, R & B, Arabic sounds, etc that combine many references of his present musicality. He wants to bring his musicality into another level, higher level of musicality in his career (and the highest point among other K-pop singers)……
Xia works with American dancers that have voluptuous body (for female dancers) and great muscles and well figured (for male dancers)…..meanwhile, this kind of dancers are very common for American artists as well as their European counterparts. For Xia, this choice is a breakthrough in Korean because most Korean singers work with slim dancers, representing basic public favorite preference of South Korean dancers…….Whereas Xia is portrayed to have slimmer body than all of his back-up dancers…….symbolizing Xia’s passion to combine both East and West cultures. Difference in body’s size and sculptures send a message that Xia, as an Asian singer, can mix with Western cultures, and even shows his passion to conquer the international music market, thus he also prefers to work with Flowsik as his rap partner, instead of working with Yoochun in this song.
What makes people don’t get used to it is mostly about his outfits and make-up, since Xia is described as having both sides of being masculine and feminine. For me, Xia tries to tell the world that he is a very democratic person since he is opened to many views of culture. he is not afraid of cross-dressing (a man dressed like a girl and vice versa, as in the scene of snowy land where Xia wore long maroon dress with knee-high boots), he’s not afraid of exploring sexuality, the wilderness and the dark sides of every human being, of unleashing his different level of masculinity (about the scenes of showing off his abs, female dancers hold his body, Xia holds the female dancers)………The change of his hair colors and hair styles also convey a different stage of someone’s change or preference. No single style is absolutely gorgeous or great. No single physical appearance is perfect. What makes people agree on does not mean always be correct. Everything is relative. In this case, unlike most Korean singers who want to expose only the great look and body with similar styles, Xia does not care whether people like his appearance in this MV or not. What is more important is that he has his own standards of musicality that are different from majority of Korean singers……….
For him, it is not only about likes and dislikes, love or hate, Asian or not, regional or international, but also a deep consideration to learn a new culture, to work with new people, to create something out-of-the-box………..
As I know, Xia is enthusiastic about Latin America (both about the soccer and the dance)…..no wonder he incorporates some portrayals of Latino’s dance in his MV (see: the scenes of wearing red plaid ribbon on his head and some movements similar to Tango, Samba, and Flamenco dances)……..
When he has orange hair, he wants to set him free of similar representation of SM artists, always be under control of SM…(that’s my opinion related to transparent water hose in his neck and also on the girls’ body)……The domination of SM on the artists has controlled overall body and mind……….At the end, Xia is in position where he is free of such domination, here it is portrayed when he can be free, not in a tight cluster or a special group. Instead, he smiles happily of being able who he is, the way he is, how he sees something, how he interacts to his friends, and how his original musicality to his fans…:)
There is a scene where Xia is being a center of attraction, showing that he is the real center of attention. All Korean singers must take a look at him, it is not only about creating good-listening music, but most importantly about the message that a singer wants to convey through the music………but Xia is not selfish, he also wants to hold the camera and wants to see other people surrounding him….This scene means that he is a good listener, attentive, up-to-date, and yet very sociable……
My greatest salute to Xia…..to be the Master of Tarantallegra……not to be only a follower, but a trendsetter, ….to create a breakthrough in Korean music industry and also international music market……..to be honest about what kind of singer you are….to be free to express your deepest feelings through your music. He is a modern musical prodigy……

P.S. regarding this music- what makes it more exceptional is the fact that this is homegrown – Junsu composed and arranged it while Juno wrote the lyrics. I am not an artist nor a music teacher. I am an English teacher…..Actually I’ve been a silent lurker of JYJ3 for many times. I did the comment automatically once my brain was fatigue of checking my students’ work…….I also do similar way of analysis to another media, including an advertisement and a movie. I wish I could write more often…..but I am just too busy due to deadlines this week. Watching Xia’s Tarantallegra MV helps me relaxing my mind and my soul of exposure towards quality music….

I had the same thought. Where a number of people see the red outfit as a dress, I see it more as a tunic, as in Cossack tunic style. Very old school Russian style. I get the feeling a great deal of research was done by the entire creative team for this MV. To incorporate so much diversity and have it all blend so well, is nothing short of amazing. Even the accessories for each outfit went with what was worn. Nothing was thrown into just to create a visual, thought was put into it to create the visual. I’m truly blown away.
yes I saw his red outfit more as a tunic…… not as a dress…. I loved that style…. it reminded me of the poster for In Heaven where Jae was wearing that long white tunic with his black boots … awww I just love that style… if I was skinny I would definitely be wearing clothes like that!!! so stylish!

Hi there, we share almost similar name……Thank you….yeah, I seldom write comments lately, especially the long one, he he….but actually I still have more words to say about Xia and his Tarantallegra MV and album. Instead of using Junsu as his individual stage name, Junsu lets people know him personally as Xia, because he wants to distinguish himself as a soloist and a member of JYJ. He has distinctive style of music as compared to his presence of JYJ member. He wants to explore his world and to release all of his emotions in his songs……..So it is more about an artist’s personal identity. Xia is in his own world of music, however, as Junsu of JYJ, he still wants to link to his beloved brothers of singer, by contributing his song for Rooftop Prince OST to link to Yoochun that currently shows great success as an actor and also by letting Jaejoong to include his self-composed ballad song, showing Xia’s support and strong chemistry to his Jaejoong0hyung, to respect him, and to deliver Jaejoong’s romantic-melancholic side. Overall, Xia tries to balance his musical genres…….by keeping fast-tempo, up-beat songs in balance with melancholic, yet romantic ballad song……

Yes, the haters everywhere are coming out of the woodwork. Serious envy going on here. But that’s okay, does not detract from the awesomeness of the work. My thoughts, given how fiercely good this album is projected to be, look for the increased suppression of the album. Out and out right competition with work of this quality is going to cause some sleepness nights and a great deal of OT trying to dismiss it.

Since this is my day, I had a few drinks LOL; four glasses of wine to be exact but don’t be tricked ladies, I’m not drunk; my mind is crystal clear now but I feel totally relaxed. How to describe Junsu’s “Tarantallegra” properly…. I’ve watched the video many times now and I fell under the spell since the very first time…… This is really an addictive song; my body has been moving to the rythm all the time and my mouth has been singing the chorus endlessly. This new Junsu is really “INTOXICATING”. His sensuality makes me shiver. I can almost touch his erotism. The way he looks at the female dancers; his facial expressions; his skilled way to dance; his hips moving deliciously; his beautiful face; his silky chest; his provocative tummy; his proactive crotch; his self confidence; his dominating attitude….. ¡OMG!!! ¡I want to feast on him immediately! I am fascinated; Junsu is driving me crazy one more time; I’m out of my mind living in Xialand. There are at least ten different Junsus in the MV, and I love each and every one of them: Junsu the Master; Junsu the Innocent (with a tiny tear slipping down his cheek while looking through the window); Junsu the Warrior, Junsu the Sex God, Junsu the Lustful; Junsu the Catman; Junsu the Slave; Junsu the Theatrical Character; Junsu the Androginous; Junsu the Pure; Junsu the Original. He attracts me like bees to the honey; I sense in him a great amount of sensuality and his attitude is burning me alive. The sweet childish man became the one hiding inside of him and the tiger he was keeping locked now is unleashed. His music is bewitching; there’s no other way to describe it. “Tarantallegra” is really a spell, and I fell deep under it; it’s controlling my mind and my body and there’s no escape now. Jeri Slaughter’s choreography is outstanding and the dancers are the best ones. There was no way to record such an MV using korean dancers because their attitude is very differrent; I think they lack the sensuality, the heat and the passion to dance like this. The lyrics are superb and the song was wonderfully written, composed and arranged. The Kim twins form a powerful duo to make new original music. I hope now Junsu will have another character to show as a JYJ member; Junsu the Sex God. Junsu must be very proud of the superb vanguardist work of art he made of “Tarantallegra”. I want to say “I knew it; I knew we must expected no other thing but greatness from Kim Junsu”. And I definitely L-O-V-E to see him feeling good with his new physical aspect; he just adores the way he looks now; he feels gorgeous, sexy and attractive; and all this comes to his self confidence. And about me, I want to say I am Junsu’s captive in mind, soul and body, and I don’t want to escape because I am a victim of his spell and the Stockholm Syndrome is consuming me slowly because I am lost in love with my captor Kim Junsu.

JYJ IS NOT under the umbrella of a big money making machine like SME that can afford to throw money away on useless concepts because they have 8 different groups bringing in money and that revenue is used to fund whatever group is their darling at the moment. The group members of SME bear NO financial risk whatsoever because they are not personally bankrolling their concerts and tours. For the SLAVES of SME they are employees earning a salary.. it is a J-O-B.
JYJ DOES NOT HAVE THAT LUXURY. Who do you think funded those concerts in Canada, the US, Asia, Germany, Spain, and South America? These three men are funding their careers out of their own pockets. For every album, concert tour.. they are funding these ventures themselves. And even if they have investors.. then believe me they have to make a profit or they will be in debt. So why am I saying this? These three need each other not just emotionally but financially. But of late we now have a fandom that thinks it’s okay not to support all three. Then how will your bias get that solo album or tour? If people think its OKAY to believe the members JYJ are competing against each other and even harbor secret hopes that only their bias will succeed and the other two will fail.. then they are really very deluded.
I venture to say that Kim Junsu will gladly put up a portion of the income he has earned from Elizabeth, his solo album and his tour to assist his BROTHERS when it comes their time for a solo album and tours.
I venture to say ALL three will gladly pool their earnings from their individual activities in order to help each other.
So for those who want to put down one of the members because he is not your bias or make snarky remarks here or for the cowards (and I have seen some of you) that go to YouTube, K-Pop and SeoulBeats,Twitter and criticise the member that is not your bias… you are only shooting yourself in the foot. (and please I have nothing against constructive criticism)
I am not asking you to love all three I am simply saying be careful of the words you spew out.

There is no JYJ without the 3, have you people ever heard of “all for one and one for all”. I am an older fan, i went to their concert in Germany and i can honestly say that these boys are the best at what they do, just support them and pray that there will come a time when they will be truly free to live their life to their hearts content.

It’s funny how people are saying they are “relieved” the video came out better than the the teasers. ??? WOW how strange… since much of the content of the teasers are right in the final product only the sequence was different..
If people are relieved it’s because they made an “assumption” about what message Junsu was trying to convey instead of waiting for the complete final product. They applied their own lense and pre-conceived notions and ideas to the teasers… some saying it was demonic.. some saying Junsu was now gay, the dancers are gay.. some saying Junsu hates Asians because he used American dancers…some saying Junsu was abandoning his ballads.. some saying they still want chubby Su and Baby Su back…… just all kinds of strange interpretations. Some even saying they could not be his fan anymore… Bye.. Bye…
The problem was they chose to pass judgement on the MV instead of waiting to see the WHOLE VIDEO IN CONTEXT in it’s full presentation and sequence along with the music and the understanding of the lyrics… It’s like saying a painting sucks after the artist has put just one brush stroke on the canvas or saying a song is no good after hearing the first three notes!

As you can see from the charts, Xia Tarantallegra is well received around the world. Some haters are the only ones trying to put a negative spin on the video. I am so happy for Junsu that his hard work has paid of. With big risks, comes even greater rewards.
What haters tend to forget…they are not the sum total of the world. The rest of the world is quite knowledgeable thank you very much. Do they really think people from other cultures and experiences are so uninformed? It’s almost as if they don’t get out much.

I’m so use to seeing videos like this in the US, specially with rock musicians and believe me they do worst things in their videos than Junsu is doing in his. To make this type of video in places where close minded people are the target needs allot of guts, and Junsu has prove to have it and doesn’t give an effing about the bad critics because if he would, he would not have done this video and I’m sure there are more to come. Maybe I’m over thinking things, but Junsu was the one who receive much criticism of his “apron” costume in “Ayyy Girl” MV back then. And still he is the first one of JYJ whom stepped up from their fear of not able to ever perform again, which make him decided to take the role in “Mozart” musical. Right now, he is again the first one taking a step on solo album… With this MV coming out, maybe he will again receive harsh criticism. That’s why I really appreciate Junsu for his courage.

In all my flawed and uneducated music-ness I still find this Mv interesting in a devious kind of way – meaning (and it just might be me) that I find certain aspects of it being incorporated from other of “his” songs, but I like it that way. If my ears are not deceiving me (and they could be since i have in NO WAY any major music training – does 4 yrs of HS chorus & 2 yrs of flute/band practice count? – I think not) I find the song’s 1st note “starts” like MIssion, but the beat seems to be like a remix of Xiahtic. I see the dancing like part of Intoxication, and his one “high” note to be like that he would do in one of his musicals.
I’m not complaining, mind you, I’m actually kind of smirking that not only is he poking at other idols about conforming to SK music industry’s “mold” for singers (see lyrics), but perhaps he just made a song that sort of “steals back” both Xiahtic and Intoxication. (Unless he owns Intoxication and not Avex – unsure of that.)
I, too, am not crazy about autotone, but I think (personally) he was giving us a sample (both musically and visually) of all the “types” or “sameness” that appear in MVs from SK and then “stepping them up” with some of his own styles and adding Flowsik (guest singer). I really like the dancing in the snow, though i dont really care for the dancers in the beginning part. I only want to see Junsu shirtless, tyvm.
Then, of course, I could just be reading into this whole thing. Overall, yes, he is showing us a more mature, sexy side then even Intoxication gave us. I just hope that he doesnt let too much of a Western influence invade his MVs.

Etymology: The Tarantella is a dance originating in Italy. It was believed to cure the effects of the bite of a Tarantula by causing the victim to sweat out the toxin. It wasn’t until centuries later that scientists determined the Black Widow was actually the venomous spider in question; people merely blamed the Tarantula because of its size. Allegramay be derived from allegro, a musical tempo meaning “quick and lively”; or simply from the word “leg” as this is the only body part affected by the jinx. (Cr. Harry Potter Wiki)

If you happen to follow me on twitter (@Knotname), you would know that I had a very strong first impression on what this song and its music video are trying to get across. Though I continue to hold such thoughts, I have discovered more intricate layers of unsaid messages as I looped the video indefinitely. In retrospect, what I originally thought was nothing but only a small supplementary portion of Junsu’s message.
Well, let’s start with my initial impression. First time through the video and the lyrics (http://jyj3.net/2012/05/13/video-junsu-official-mv-tarantallegra-full-ver/), I thought Tarantallegra was a statement to the current K-Pop industry, where all music begin to sound the same and the audience mindlessly following meaningless trends. Under monetary pressure, the artists are making music to follow such trends in order to please the public who had no idea why they enjoyed it in the first place. This vicious cycle makes voices lost, and Junsu and Junho’s purpose is to point it out.
This is a very superficial read of the lyrics and the music video. Junho, Junsu’s twin brother and the lyricist, says this quite blatantly in the lyrics, “Music is all the same everywhere/It cannot escape from that format/But my standard is different from you/The world is gradually moving faster/The trend will change in the blink of an eye”. However, once I moved further down through the lyrics, I cannot help but gain a sense that a message regarding JYJ’s recent difficulties also exists within the song. As you all know, JYJ is currently under a lot of restrictions and discrimination in South Korea, where they could not perform on television, their music videos could not be aired, and this recent case of charting injustice. And the lyrics talk about it pretty straight on, “Now aren’t you tired of the world controlled by them”.
Enough about trivial understandings and moving onto something (perhaps) a little deeper.
After looping for about five hours straight (I wonder if I’ll ever grow tired of the song?), I’ve gathered that Tarantallegra has multiple central ideas:
The need to bring music back to its roots
Junsu’s intention of unbounding himself
“What music would you listen to?”
Please do note that all the ideas can (and should) be extended to broader topics beyond music, but for the purpose of this analysis, I will be keeping it within said scope ^^.
Bringing Music Back to Its Roots
One of the things Tarantallegra points out is the necessity to strip this thing called music down to its barest form, and bring it back in its rawest shape. Phrases in the lyrics such as “Let’s enjoy/Be intoxicated with music/So what/The music/You will feel it” says it all. The reason why music exists in the first place is to entertain, to release people of their emotions, to bring people onto their feet and enjoy a good time. Music in and of itself is, ultimately, tarantallegra.
Granted, Tarantallegra is a fancy piece – there were some audio refinements (including auto-tune) and rich background music (gotta love the strings) – and may make you think that this song does not align with its message. But it is precisely the strong beats, the flare in Junsu’s voice and Flowsik’s rap that speeds up one’s pulse and immerse with the music. It is about taking music away from the usual love-related topics, and let the sounds – the rawest form of music – take control. This leads me to another point: The goal of this song and music video is to make it a tarantallegra.
This is evident from the beginning – Tarantallegra is meant to be captivating. We don’t need Flowik to say “Xia get them” to understand this. I’ll boldly say this: I think Junsu and the staff succeeded. The song itself is a spell, it pulls the audience into an alternative world of beauty and raw emotions, even some parts of the song sound other-worldly. One interpretation of the spider scene is that Junsu is capturing all of the audience in this web called music, which serves as a wonderful link back to the etymology – that tarantallegra stems from the words tarantula and allegro.
Well, Junsu himself knew that he had successfully placed a spell on the audience through this song – his victorious smirk in the end says it all.
Junsu’s Intention of Unbounding Himself
On Youtube comments, I constantly see things in the lines of “This is really gay” or “I think I’ve found Mr. Gaga”. I highly doubt Junsu actually wanted to say something about gender, but rather he is using it as an avenue to get his point across, especially since people are so sensitive to those kinds of hints nowadays. Throughout the lyrics, phrases that follow tarantallegra all refers to indulging oneself into music, to release bounds and to enjoy the moment. In the previous section, I’ve covered the first, and now moving onto releasing oneself from limitations.
I know throughout the music video it seems that Junsu really wanted to discuss sexuality, especially with all the catwalks and suggestive movements by dancers of both genders. However, though it may seem sexy on the surface, all the tensions in Junsu’s gestures don’t seem to stem from sexuality to me, but rather his desire to break free. When he twists his body, what I see is this sharp emotion of struggle and of defiance. Instead of using a soft melody to share his tears, he chooses a distinctive allegro that describes his pain under such restraints and uses his body to showcase these feelings.
In the opening scene where he sits on the throne, the vibe that Junsu gives off is that of a dominating figure who is above all. However, he is also heavily bounded – here come the second (and I think the better) interpretation of the spider/web scene. Junsu is limited by himself, because of his extant image as an idol and a public figure, there are things he could not say in words or in his music. As those dancers strip him from the web, Junsu is freed from his own bindings; and on his face, that commanding look again.
This constraint is also illustrated in the scene where all the dancers are holding cameras around Junsu – the watchful and judging eyes around him imposes great pressure – his facial expression and the way he exerts power through his arm signify all the strain and frustration. I feel that it may be a statement towards the sasaeng fans and their unrelenting watch. And this is where I had a sudden realization that all of this connects back to the etymology – tarantallegra is the dance that cures the bite of the tarantula. If Junsu himself and the standards around him are the tarantula, then his dance speaks all about his freedom and nothing else – Tarantallegra is his cure from this “bite”. What really says it all is the scene later where Junsu also takes on the camera, where he poses question and judges those standards around him; at that moment, he is no longer bounded.
Remember that scene where Junsu is being touched by multiple hands and all Junsu-bias went screaming “noooooooooo”? Yes, the scene was arousing and many of us wanted to be the ones who were touching him, but don’t forget his eyes – even when he was caressed by so many, his eyes were cold, unmoved and filled with indestructible strength. With so much influences and desires around him, Junsu remains unswayed with his firm faith. This is definitely something that is present throughout the music video – while so much suggestive movements are ongoing, Junsu’s expression is never wavering. It’s always composed, calm, and in control.
Pointed out by emm gee in comments, the back-up dancers are all interesting picks. The male dancers look fairly feminine while the females dancers possess strong features – both countering gender stereotypes. She further suggested that this may be Junsu’s way of breaking the sourceless trends of what is called “beautiful” and thus releasing the audience from such bindings.
Now, let’s talk about that drop of tear. Within this powerful atmosphere throughout the music video, this tear seems to be out of place as tears are seen as a sign of weakness. However, in this scene, this drop of tear is not sadness or cowardice but rather his strength so that even during unbearable pain he would not let his emotion overtake him – he is still, after all, dictating himself. As a reader commented below (dbullock @___djb___), this Junsu in tear most closely resembles the AngelSu that all of us love and are used to – the bangs, the lesser make up, the non-flaring expression. Notice that the old angel-like Junsu is behind glass and in confinement while the new devilish and dominating Junsu is dancing freely, enjoying his tarantallegra.
Throughout the whole music video, Junsu has made leaps beyond the AngelSu that I was used to. The heavy make-up, revealing clothing, and the choreography that requires every inch of him was nothing like I have ever seen before. Going back to the sexuality comments on Youtube, these extraordinary attempts that Junsu made in this music video serve nothing other than saying: He is going beyond all the preset boundaries and truly breaking free.
“What Music Would You Listen To?”
And this question posed throughout the song, “what music would you listen to?” really glues everything I’ve discussed thus far into one. In an industry where music deviated from something that touches souls and changes lives to something so superficial it erases individuality, it is necessary for the audience to realize what moves them, instead of mindlessly following the so-called trend. In this sense, the public is emancipated from these blinding stereotypes on what is “good music” and instead listening to what truly shakes their souls – what music really is. In short, the music you would listen to is your tarantallegra, it’s whatever puts you on your feet and sets you free.
