The sheer popularity of the SBS drama “Rooftop Prince” starring Park Yoo Chun broke headlines today as viewership reached an all-time high in China.
Although it has not been long since “Rooftop Prince” aired in Korea, the Chinese media portal site Baidu boasts a fan community of approximately 59,000 fans reaching 60,000 for the drama.
Park Yoo Chun’s individual fan site has over 80,000 members as well. Just recently, in celebration of Park Yoo Chun’s birthday – fan communities in four different cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chouqing all held their own commemorating events, demonstrating the wide reach of Park Yoo Chun’s popularity.
When “Rooftop Prince” is searched on the Chinese video-sharing site YouKu, the drama has over 77,000,000 views and a 9.4 rating. Fans have made over 110,000 comments on the series, ranking it first over second and third place dramas that were broadcasted over a year ago. “Rooftop Prince”, at least from the numbers and data available online – has proved to be perhaps one of the most popular Korean dramas of all time.
An individual from the drama production staff made this comment, “It was really surprising to hear that the drama was getting this much attention from China when we haven’t even released it abroad yet. The actors and staff had great chemistry. Not to mention, Park Yoo Chun’s emotional performance as Joseon’s Crown Prince Lee Gak and Yong Tae Yong was simply flawlessly executed and I think that’s why the reaction has been so great for this drama.”
In addition, “Rooftop Prince” is being aired on Taiwan’s GTV and has gained a record of 1.46% viewership as a promising start. The production staff are also preparing to broadcast the drama in Japan come July.

Drama ‘Rooftop Prince’ starring Park Yoochun has ended with much success and its popularity is spreading to many countries at this point with the hint that it will be a huge hit in China.
The ‘Rooftop Prince’ fan community on the leading Chinese search engine Baidu was created when the drama had just started even in Korea and the number of members has surpassed 59,000 currently marching towards 60,000. There over 80,000 fan community members for Park Yoochun as an individual and recently on Park Yoochun’s birthday, there were birthday events celebrating the actor’s birthday in four major cities in China including Shanghai and Beijing proving his popularity.
On Youku, the largest video site in China, the ‘Rooftop Prince’ related videos have recorded over 77 million views with an average score of 9.4. There also over 110,000 comments by the fans relating to ‘Rooftop Prince’ which is the highest for a Korean drama yet. Given the fact that the #2 and #3 dramas for the number of comments have aired over a year ago, the number is truly amazing.
An insider of the drama relayed, “It hasn’t even officially aired in China so it’s really amazing. The chemistry among the actors and staff was great and especially the leading man Park Yoochun did a great job expressing the feelings of Lee Gak and Yong Tae Yong going back and forth between Joseon and Seoul and that’s why the response seems even better.”
When ‘Rooftop Prince’ first aired on GTV in Taiwan, it had recorded 1.46% in ratings which is the highest for a Korean drama in Taiwan in the last 2 years for an impressive start. It is scheduled to premier in Japan in July, so the heat wave of ‘Rooftop Prince’ is expected to continue for some time.
