I thought I read/heard somewhere that you need their permission to call them oppa. Just like you would need the older female’s permission to call her unnie. It indicates a certain level of closeness. And though we feel close to them, we are strangers from their point of view. I could be wrong, but that is what I seem to observe from my limited experience with the Korean language. (k-dramas and eatyourkimchi)
Also, it is kinda icky to me that oppa can literally mean brother or older guy you have a relationship with.
Doesn’t opa mean grandfather in German as well? (Yep, I am an American that only truly knows one language, and that one not perfectly.)
