“Not Possible” in domestic, “Welcome” abroad – JYJ’s Paradox

The trio group JYJ (Jaejoong Kim, Yuchun Park, Junsu Kim) is unique. It is difficult to see the group in the country, but the group is doing remarkable activities abroad. The team toured in Spain, Germany, Chile and Peru and the member Junsu Kim had his solo concert in Mexico – all as the first Korean singers who ever had concerts in each country. Why is the atmosphere from inside and outside is so different? You may see an equation of Korean Pop industry’s power structure.
◆ Aftermath of TVXQ Controversy?

The three members of JYJ had their debut in the year of 2004 as the quintet TVXQ under SM Entertainment. TVXQ shortly stood at the top in Korean pop industry and had 100,000 members in its fan-club. In 2009, the three members moved to the present agency and formed JYJ after ‘application for injunction to terminate the validity of exclusive contract’ against SM, claiming that 13-year of exclusive contract was too long. The lawsuit with SM is still ongoing.
After this, they have had difficulties in album distribution, venue rental, TV appearances and other things. With tremendous number of album sales and popularity, the public has not seen them in any of music/entertainment programmes for the last 3 years at all.
For example, Yuchun Park appeared in ‘SKK Scandal(KBS)’ and ‘Rooftop Prince(SBS)’ as a leading role, but no one could see his face in entertainment programmes of the both broadcasters despite the fact that actors appearing in the same broadcaster’s entertainment programmes during their drama is an unwritten rule in order to promote dramas. Even in some cases, his appearances were flip-flopped after scheduling.
First, broadcasting companies’ stance is that ‘we cannot cast the singer under legal dispute’. However, JYJ insists that ‘Independent activities are guaranteed until the ruling of the lawsuit on the merits’. Some say that this situation is because of external pressure.
“I was concerned a lot about the present situation that I can be on TV only through dramas. But I decided that it would be better to do something I can do the best, (knowing promotion would be difficult) released a solo album in May”, said Junsu Kim at the press conference in Mexico. His music video of the title song ‘Tarantallegra’ which cost him half a billion Won to make, has never once been aired.
JYJ looked overseas instead. The group betted on overseas stages with the fandom they established since TVXQ.

The atmosphere at Junsu Kim’s Solo Concert at Blackberry Auditorio in Mexico City, Mexico on Sep 6 was just boiling. The concert was the part of his North/South American tour followed from New York and Los Angeles. 3,000 fans were shouting his name and ‘I Love You, Junsu!’ in Korean and sung ‘Besame Mucho(Kiss me much)’ together. Fans were all sung along his latest Korean lyrics such as ‘Set Me Free’. Junsu Kim is due to continue European Tour in the second-half of this year. JYJ also toured in 15 cities from the last year to the first-half of this year and met 210,000 fans around the world.
Paradoxically speaking, the restriction in Korea domestic has become the other way into the new steps. The agency says South American tours are deficit as they are too far from Korea, but it explains that “In the manner of investment, we are trying to go anywhere as long as fans are there”.
“JYJ’s case is a condensable example of the fact that the practical power belongs to management companies, the capital itself under this idol producing system, although the popularity is earned by an idol member”, Jakga Kim, the pop-music critic commented. He continued, “JYJ showed the possibility that an idol group CAN survive by themselves, not depend on the cartel which acts on collusion with management companies and broadcasting companies”.

PSY’s company did not contact CNN or NBC. The reason why PSY’s “horse dance” started getting noticed was because famous American celebrities started tweeting about how amazing Gangnam style is and how they wanted to personally learn the dance. After Scooter Braun (Justin Beiber’s manager) took interest in PSY and signed him to a large American label, Interscope Records. Scooter used his connection to get PSY onto many American TV shows such as Ellen, The Today Show, etc. PSY success is completely different than what you are thinking. His fans did not push him to international fame, his fans did not email CNN or NBC or whomever to write stories about him. It was completely natural.
I think international JYJ fans have tried emailing overseas broadcasting companies however the main issue is that International fans are spread out EVERYWHERE. It is nearly impossible to connect all of the international fans due to language barriers, time zones, and etc. This is why it may seem as though International fans aren’t as “unified” or as “strong” as the Korean and Japanese fans who all share the same country, language, culture.

You may already notice , even Junsu recent tour, the youngest one, have learned to “take it easy” whenever he was interviewed with the legal dispute with ex-company. Just minimize all these dispute and focus on their current and future attempts.

I agree with you on this one, I know Junsu loves his concert tour but I am so worry about his profit because of his big expense, lighting, special effects, dancers, all the hotel and airline tickets… Whereas on the other side, fan meeting can be much more easier to gain profit because of less expense. I was kind of shock when I notice the ticket price for fan meeting and concert is pretty much the same. Junsu is the best singer to me, I really hope he deserve much better.
Also one more thing, I know Junsu is having his fan meeting for his Japanese fan in Jeju Island at the end of this month, I hope his fan is paying for the airline ticket, not Junsu (like the way that did for their membership week and I heard that is also Junsu’s idea), I know he loves his fan but he should “save” some money too.

Korean Ministry of Culture , guess many domestic fans have helped express their strong will already.
(Korean fans are no joking, they can be very fierce yet rational)
Japan also not happy with this Korean Ministry of Culture, because in their eyes, this organization is an invader,
trading unfairly to Japan. ( hallyu production at lower cost, and many sponsor , max output of tv drama, movie, songs, idols etc )
With these two strong constant protests, nothing has been change. Behind this Ministry, many committees.
You may be interested to know, SM as a listed company, though not that big size, but behind them,
are lots of retirement funds.
So, to pull down ALL these for 3 young men? what is the cost.
These interlocking , interesting corps webs , very easy to notice even in US and many other countries.
Rule of the game never in the hand of the weak, yet I trust JYJ has already done their part.
The Hallyu is a cultural weapon, a mechanism for whole Korea to reach out and influence other countries.
It needs strict discipline, sizable benefit for govt and big corp, not for its idols.
Korea needs this big head mechanism to keep on moving, instead of domestic justice.
JYJ is technically beaten, yet, spiritually, JYJ has won .

believe me, i feel you both..i feel like i want to cry along with you..thanks for sharing all the informations. As much as i want jyj to gain easier money (lol @ imagining jyj sell cupcakes’s francise to fans, but it might be a good idea), i never want them to leave doing music neither to emigrate out from south korea. Those two things are their prides. At this point of time (very hard time, i think), i just hope that fans remain loyal,encouraging,supporting, so that jyj not giving up.
Note: jyj (well, everyone including us) does need to start thinking on how to make easy money, as i think become successful enterpreneur is the most fair and possible way. Best of the best wish for jyj.

I hope nobody asked this before in this post… they sold “only” 320.000 copies of the Korean album? Is this possible? I assume that not only Korean fans bought it, but international too, so wouldn’t it be logical that more than 450.000 copies?
