Spending a few hundred dollars on a concert ticket? Queuing overnight for an autograph session? Flying overseas specially to attend your idol’s event? While many believe that these are crazy fan actions, there are cases that are far more extreme than these.
How about willing all that you have instead of spending on a concert ticket like what a fan of Fann Wong did? Or perhaps making your parents sell their property to come up with the funds for you to fly overseas to meet your idol like what an Andy Lau fan did?
We list the 10 craziest fanatical actions over the years.
#1. A 40-year-old fan of the Queen of Caldecott – Fann Wong – had reportedly willed all of her possessions to the actress. The will which was drawn up five years ago, states that Fann would inherit all her material wealth including a car, condo, stocks and savings.
It is unknown if the fan had passed on but when approached by the media, Fann’s manager claimed that it is the first time she heard that someone willed all her fortune to the actress.
How crazy?
We think that is beyond Fann-atic (pun intended)!
#2. The scandal blew out of proportions when videos and audio clips of the JYJ members physically and verbally assaulting their fans went viral on the Internet after a media outlet, Dispatch, reported on the incident.
A video clip documented Yoochun allegedly hitting a sasaeng (‘private life’ in Korean, loosely translated to overly-zealous) fan and audio clips that lasted more than 10 minutes included Jaejoong spewing vulgarities at the fans.
Labeled as sasaeng fans, these fans are stalkers of the trio and are extreme in the ways they use to follow the members. Not only do they hire taxis to follow JYJ round the clock, they have also installed security cameras in the members’ apartments’ carparks. Some even went as far as to break into their apartments while they were asleep.
How crazy?
Trespassing on your idols’ privacy? We say, “Hide your kids, hide your wife!”
#3.We have heard of many tattoo-related horror stories such as spelling errors on tattoos and having to erase a spouse’s name after divorce and we thought that would be sufficient to deter people from making mistakes with their tattoos. Guess not.
While some of these looked like a decent replica of the stars themselves, there are horror stories of the faces looking distorted after tattooing. Twihards (extreme Twilight fans), is the love for a movie series worth doing this?
How crazy?
We are not even going into the pain that one had to bear to tattoo such a huge portrait on their body but it might be hard to explain to your future spouse or children about the tattoo.
#4. A Chinese fan, Yang Lijuan, a big fan of Andy Lau since 1994, was so obsessed with the star that her parents sold their only house in Lanzhou City in order to fund her trip to meet Andy. On March 25, 2007, her wish was fulfilled when she met the star at a fan-club gathering for his birthday and managed to snap a photo with Andy.
That wasn’t quite enough for Lijuan. She felt that Andy should have a conversation with her instead of just that short moment when they took a photo together. Her father, Yang Qingji, then committed suicide the next day, leaving a 12-page letter addressed to Andy. He chided the superstar for being “cold to my daughter” and killed himself after his daughter and wife went to bed.
Lijuan blamed Andy for his father’s untimely death and insisted that the superstar should meet her again. Andy responded through his agency that he had fulfilled the fan’s hope of meeting him and wished that she can go back to her hometown and start life afresh again.
How crazy?
We are not sure which is freakier – Lijuan’s level of infatuation with the superstar or that her dad committed suicide over Andy being “cold” towards his daughter.
#5. What could be so bad about a love letter from a fan-girl?
This particular fan-letter to 2PM’s Taecyeon was crafted with special ink – blood. However, it was not the kind of blood that was obtained by slitting oneself, but the kind that is available a few days every 28 days.
After netizens questioned the authenticity of the bloody letter, the fan-girl went all the way to prove that it was indeed her menstrual blood by uploading another photo of her bloody pad.
How crazy?
We wonder if writing in blood, or menstrual blood, made a bigger statement than writing in ink. If anything, we are grossed out and we bet Taecyeon was too.
#6.We all know how dedicated Justin Bieber’s Beliebers (fans’ name for Bieber fans) are to the young singer but to almost cause Norway to fall into a state of emergency? That’s on a whole different level.
Bieber was scheduled to hold a free concert at Oslo, Norway in May earlier this year and tens of thousands of Beliebers overran the city to catch a glimpse of the superstar. Police in Norway were on the verge of declaring a state of emergency in Oslo and had appealed to Bieber for help.
The superstar than tweeted “…for the show to happen u must all listen to the police. we are all concerned for your safety and i want what is best for u. please listen.’ (sic)
The fanatical rush to watch Bieber also resulted in 49 teenage girls being injured with 14 being taken to emergency care.
How crazy?
We can safely say that the Bieber fever continues to burn amongst the teenage girls, who would give up everything – even their safety – just to see him in the flesh.
#7. Rumoured to have bullied their now-ex member, Hwayoung, T-ara received an immerse backlash from the public as many fans turned into anti-fans.
Their company, Core Contents Media, further aggravated the public when they released malicious reports about Hwayoung, shifting all blame onto the girl and claiming that the group was the victim instead.
This led to a wave of criticism from the fans and public, causing many repercussions for the group. T-ara’s solo concert on Aug 11 was postponed indefinitely while the group’s endorsement deals took a beating with Tony Moly, a skincare brand, taking down all of the advertisements that carried the group’s images with immediate effect.
Fans soon turned into ardent anti-fans after feeling that they have been lied to all these while. Starting by leaving the group’s official website (more than 8000 fans left the fan site), then posting pictures of them destroying the group’s merchandises, a petition was even set up requesting for the group’s disbandment. T-ara, who recently performed in a joint concert, was faced with zero cheers from the audience and in some fan-cams, boos was even heard.
How crazy?
When love transformed into hate, it is indeed a force to behold!
#8. How much would you spend to vote for your favourite artiste in a popularity vote?
An AKB48’s Oshima Yuko’s fan bought 5,500 copies of Everyday, Kachuusha, each containing a voting code, in order to vote for his favorite member in the group’s third annual election. The member with the most votes in the election would stand in the center position for the next single.
With each of these CDs costing 1,600Yen (approximately S$27), the feat alone cost him S$148,500. With his 5,500 votes, Oshima Yuko was ranked number two, a dip from her first in the second election, for the third annual elections.
How crazy?
It is kind of extreme, if not creepy, and very expensive to achieve what he did. Safe to say, he must have been a huge fan.
#9. It has gradually became a trend to send specially decorated lunch boxes to K-Pop stars, usually arranged by fan-clubs after coordinating with the artistes’ agencies, for events and shows recording.
Each lunch box might cost up to $150 and fan-clubs not only cater to the artistes’ lunch boxes but also for the crew that accompanied the artistes. The trend had also led to the startup of a few businesses that cater to this niche market of packing lunch for artistes.
Wall Street Journal even reported on this trend when A-Pink, a relatively new K-Pop girl-group, received lunch-boxes paid by one 38-year-old male fan.
JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong’s Chinese fans went an extra mile by catering a full buffet lunch, with Korean and Japanese cuisine for the artiste and his drama crew. Putting all the other fan-support activities to shame, the fan-club even prepared an afternoon tea snack package for all the crew.
How crazy?
Crazy comes with a cost nowadays. If a made-with-love lunch box costs $150, we can only imagine how much the buffet spread would cost.
#10 Rather than spending money on presents for their idols, some fans have gone the other direction by using that money to donate to charities in the name of their idols.
A trend in Korea is to send rice wreaths instead of flower wreaths for their idols’ events or concerts. The fans could choose how many kilogrammes of rice they wish to send and would engage a company to be in charge of bringing the sacks of rice to the venue, decorated with banners and photos of the artiste. These sacks of rice are then donated to designated charities in Korea after the event.
Fans of JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong set a record of sending a total of 23.68 tons of rice for his new drama Dr. Jin’s press conference.
How crazy?
23 tons of rice donated for one event is indeed rather crazy, but in a good way. We say, continue this trend!
So out of 10, 1 for JYJ and 2 for Jaejoong, but I don’t think #9 and #10 are crazy deeds, when a lot of people benefited from those acts, they can’t be crazy .
when you RT this on TL, i already made a reading and found the cases extremes to the bound of craziness indeed. it’s only when i’ve been in this fandom that i get to know some/little of the way things are treated in SK entertainment industry and fan culture. sasaengs/agcaes are appalling, disgusting. the whole picture is new to me and i didn’t know they actually exists because in our country, our artist i believe do not suffer this treatment from fans. and they can lead private lives freely without much intervention(and scandals at their own initiative and carelessness di ba?)
when reading posts about fan gifts/support at filming, i noticed already the grandness or lavishness of Jae’s fan union, and as the article says, putting shame on other fan service, this style affects both ways, while enormous donations can benefit many, and this act can continue in a good way, i hope that fans who live off their idol satisfying their greed and uncontrollable passion will go down the drain.
Except for 9 & 10, this is scary crazy stuff. Poor Andy Lau. I’m glad he had the good sense not to allow himself to be emotionally bullied by his “fan.” As for T-ara, I don’t even know them, but after reading about them bullying one of their members in another website, I have to admit that it left a really bad impression on me of them, so I can understand their fans turning away from them.

You’re so right sister, I was so shocked that in Kpop world, having a healthy relationship and being transparent about it is a “scandal” I have to re-read and review what “scandal” meant –> “An action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage.” How will JYJ’s having GFs and acknowledging it in public be regarded as morally and legally wrong?

In my opinion, anything beyond norm is addiction. The question is, who decides and define “the norm”? Coz it’s also culture-based.
Like what sis @maejae said, we don’t hear much of this type of fan services/ sponsorships with our local artists in Phil, but it seems customary in other countries. Expressing one’s adulation is culture-bound. Still some of the cases cited here just went way,way,way beyond reasonable bounds. It’s a pity when “fans” loose their boundaries and grounding with reality, when they distort truths, loose their proprieties and sensibilities, loose their sanity altogether…
Though I play looney a lot, I pray I won’t go to that level, so help me God! Because in reality, anyone among us can just flip anytime. With the loads of stresses & burdens we face and cope up with daily, it’s so easy to loose ourselves totally.
Also there’s peer pressure in fandom besides fanaticism & rivalries. There’s also extensive and intensive manipulations by business entities – they don’t appear as vivid, they remain shadows out there, but the subliminal messages are all over. With the global connections made convenient by technology, men/women are becoming more & more distant physically from each other. And that’s the irony of it. Technology is making us all connected, yet disconnects us too. The distancing phenomenon is becoming more and more gigantic. If we are not mindful of these affairs, we can totally loose ourselves to the world of fantasy and imagination and become split and flip just like what some fans did as cited in the article.
Thus in the spirit of Family-ness in JYJ3 esp in GAPP, let’s do look after each other’s back. Sorry for my long response. Though this should be in ODP, but since I relate more in GAPP, i decided to say my speech here *wink!* Really, this is what i like abt this section. Besides loving JYJ and expressing it all the way we want, we also take good care of each other, and be warm, caring, sensitive to one another. We may play and joke a lot, & be delusional, but behind those are our good intentions of building & nurturing relationships among us. This is the reason behind my bias for this spot… in addition to having fun. We care about relationships and we go out to connect with fellow JYJ lovers. We don’t have to be “cerebral here” [not that we are less] We just need to be ourselves and have fun, build friendships, connect & share our common love for JYJ. No pressure! For me, this kind of cyber-environment allows us to keep ourselves and our fellow JYJ lovers grounded on our realities, and not flip. Lastly, there’s a saying in my profession that says “People who admits they’re getting insane, won’t become one. coz insane people are in complete denial of their insanity or they are not capable of any insight…So let’s continue being the way we are here,happy and loving fans of JYJ… Muah!!

I was reading drama blogs with fan wars with Eun Hye fans as she’s a possible lead actress with Chunnie. I even hear rumors its Goo Hye Sun (from Boys over flowers). But whatever the case, they said us fans are disruptive and hating on any lead girl with Chun. That is not the case! What frustrates me, is why would we bad mouth others,when of course we wouldn’t want to taint our boys image! We like whatever project JYJ does, and that goes for whoever they may act/be wtih! Sure we’re protective of our boys, but not unreasonable! We’re supportive and passionate fans.
Really? I hate fan wars. As for casting, i don’t really make it my business to comment, much more to criticize. I believe i am in no position to do so. I leave the task to the experts – producers, directors, etc. All I care and have great faith of, is that Chunnie will always deliver his best. With Chun and Jae & Junsu, its “EXCELLENCE NO LESS!”

Extreme Fan Love: Crazy or dedicated?
xinmsn uncovers how far someone would go to show their love for their favourite artistes

How far would you go for your idols?
Spending a few hundred dollars on a concert ticket? Queuing overnight for an autograph session? Flying overseas specially to attend your idol’s event? While many believe that these are crazy fan actions, there are cases that are far more extreme than these.
How about willing all that you have instead of spending on a concert ticket like what a fan of Fann Wong did? Or perhaps making your parents sell their property to come up with the funds for you to fly overseas to meet your idol like what an Andy Lau fan did?
We list the 10 craziest fanatical actions over the years.
#1. A 40-year-old fan of the Queen of Caldecott – Fann Wong – had reportedly willed all of her possessions to the actress. The will which was drawn up five years ago, states that Fann would inherit all her material wealth including a car, condo, stocks and savings.
It is unknown if the fan had passed on but when approached by the media, Fann’s manager claimed that it is the first time she heard that someone willed all her fortune to the actress.
How crazy?
We think that is beyond Fann-atic (pun intended)!
#2. The scandal blew out of proportions when videos and audio clips of the JYJ members physically and verbally assaulting their fans went viral on the Internet after a media outlet, Dispatch, reported on the incident.
A video clip documented Yoochun allegedly hitting a sasaeng (‘private life’ in Korean, loosely translated to overly-zealous) fan and audio clips that lasted more than 10 minutes included Jaejoong spewing vulgarities at the fans.
Labeled as sasaeng fans, these fans are stalkers of the trio and are extreme in the ways they use to follow the members. Not only do they hire taxis to follow JYJ round the clock, they have also installed security cameras in the members’ apartments’ carparks. Some even went as far as to break into their apartments while they were asleep.
How crazy?
Trespassing on your idols’ privacy? We say, “Hide your kids, hide your wife!”
#3.We have heard of many tattoo-related horror stories such as spelling errors on tattoos and having to erase a spouse’s name after divorce and we thought that would be sufficient to deter people from making mistakes with their tattoos. Guess not.
While some of these looked like a decent replica of the stars themselves, there are horror stories of the faces looking distorted after tattooing. Twihards (extreme Twilight fans), is the love for a movie series worth doing this?
How crazy?
We are not even going into the pain that one had to bear to tattoo such a huge portrait on their body but it might be hard to explain to your future spouse or children about the tattoo.
#4. A Chinese fan, Yang Lijuan, a big fan of Andy Lau since 1994, was so obsessed with the star that her parents sold their only house in Lanzhou City in order to fund her trip to meet Andy. On March 25, 2007, her wish was fulfilled when she met the star at a fan-club gathering for his birthday and managed to snap a photo with Andy.
That wasn’t quite enough for Lijuan. She felt that Andy should have a conversation with her instead of just that short moment when they took a photo together. Her father, Yang Qingji, then committed suicide the next day, leaving a 12-page letter addressed to Andy. He chided the superstar for being “cold to my daughter” and killed himself after his daughter and wife went to bed.
Lijuan blamed Andy for his father’s untimely death and insisted that the superstar should meet her again. Andy responded through his agency that he had fulfilled the fan’s hope of meeting him and wished that she can go back to her hometown and start life afresh again.
How crazy?
We are not sure which is freakier – Lijuan’s level of infatuation with the superstar or that her dad committed suicide over Andy being “cold” towards his daughter.
#5. What could be so bad about a love letter from a fan-girl?
This particular fan-letter to 2PM’s Taecyeon was crafted with special ink – blood. However, it was not the kind of blood that was obtained by slitting oneself, but the kind that is available a few days every 28 days.
After netizens questioned the authenticity of the bloody letter, the fan-girl went all the way to prove that it was indeed her menstrual blood by uploading another photo of her bloody pad.
How crazy?
We wonder if writing in blood, or menstrual blood, made a bigger statement than writing in ink. If anything, we are grossed out and we bet Taecyeon was too.
#6.We all know how dedicated Justin Bieber’s Beliebers (fans’ name for Bieber fans) are to the young singer but to almost cause Norway to fall into a state of emergency? That’s on a whole different level.
Bieber was scheduled to hold a free concert at Oslo, Norway in May earlier this year and tens of thousands of Beliebers overran the city to catch a glimpse of the superstar. Police in Norway were on the verge of declaring a state of emergency in Oslo and had appealed to Bieber for help.
The superstar than tweeted “…for the show to happen u must all listen to the police. we are all concerned for your safety and i want what is best for u. please listen.’ (sic)
The fanatical rush to watch Bieber also resulted in 49 teenage girls being injured with 14 being taken to emergency care.
How crazy?
We can safely say that the Bieber fever continues to burn amongst the teenage girls, who would give up everything – even their safety – just to see him in the flesh.
#7. Rumoured to have bullied their now-ex member, Hwayoung, T-ara received an immerse backlash from the public as many fans turned into anti-fans.
Their company, Core Contents Media, further aggravated the public when they released malicious reports about Hwayoung, shifting all blame onto the girl and claiming that the group was the victim instead.
This led to a wave of criticism from the fans and public, causing many repercussions for the group. T-ara’s solo concert on Aug 11 was postponed indefinitely while the group’s endorsement deals took a beating with Tony Moly, a skincare brand, taking down all of the advertisements that carried the group’s images with immediate effect.
Fans soon turned into ardent anti-fans after feeling that they have been lied to all these while. Starting by leaving the group’s official website (more than 8000 fans left the fan site), then posting pictures of them destroying the group’s merchandises, a petition was even set up requesting for the group’s disbandment. T-ara, who recently performed in a joint concert, was faced with zero cheers from the audience and in some fan-cams, boos was even heard.
How crazy?
When love transformed into hate, it is indeed a force to behold!
#8. How much would you spend to vote for your favourite artiste in a popularity vote?
An AKB48’s Oshima Yuko’s fan bought 5,500 copies of Everyday, Kachuusha, each containing a voting code, in order to vote for his favorite member in the group’s third annual election. The member with the most votes in the election would stand in the center position for the next single.
With each of these CDs costing 1,600Yen (approximately S$27), the feat alone cost him S$148,500. With his 5,500 votes, Oshima Yuko was ranked number two, a dip from her first in the second election, for the third annual elections.
How crazy?
It is kind of extreme, if not creepy, and very expensive to achieve what he did. Safe to say, he must have been a huge fan.
#9. It has gradually became a trend to send specially decorated lunch boxes to K-Pop stars, usually arranged by fan-clubs after coordinating with the artistes’ agencies, for events and shows recording.
Each lunch box might cost up to $150 and fan-clubs not only cater to the artistes’ lunch boxes but also for the crew that accompanied the artistes. The trend had also led to the startup of a few businesses that cater to this niche market of packing lunch for artistes.
Wall Street Journal even reported on this trend when A-Pink, a relatively new K-Pop girl-group, received lunch-boxes paid by one 38-year-old male fan.
JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong’s Chinese fans went an extra mile by catering a full buffet lunch, with Korean and Japanese cuisine for the artiste and his drama crew. Putting all the other fan-support activities to shame, the fan-club even prepared an afternoon tea snack package for all the crew.
How crazy?
Crazy comes with a cost nowadays. If a made-with-love lunch box costs $150, we can only imagine how much the buffet spread would cost.
#10 Rather than spending money on presents for their idols, some fans have gone the other direction by using that money to donate to charities in the name of their idols.
A trend in Korea is to send rice wreaths instead of flower wreaths for their idols’ events or concerts. The fans could choose how many kilogrammes of rice they wish to send and would engage a company to be in charge of bringing the sacks of rice to the venue, decorated with banners and photos of the artiste. These sacks of rice are then donated to designated charities in Korea after the event.
Fans of JYJ’s Kim Jaejoong set a record of sending a total of 23.68 tons of rice for his new drama Dr. Jin’s press conference.
How crazy?
23 tons of rice donated for one event is indeed rather crazy, but in a good way. We say, continue this trend!
So out of 10, 1 for JYJ and 2 for Jaejoong, but I don’t think #9 and #10 are crazy deeds, when a lot of people benefited from those acts, they can’t be crazy .

when you RT this on TL, i already made a reading and found the cases extremes to the bound of craziness indeed. it’s only when i’ve been in this fandom that i get to know some/little of the way things are treated in SK entertainment industry and fan culture. sasaengs/agcaes are appalling, disgusting. the whole picture is new to me and i didn’t know they actually exists because in our country, our artist i believe do not suffer this treatment from fans. and they can lead private lives freely without much intervention(and scandals at their own initiative and carelessness di ba?)
when reading posts about fan gifts/support at filming, i noticed already the grandness or lavishness of Jae’s fan union, and as the article says, putting shame on other fan service, this style affects both ways, while enormous donations can benefit many, and this act can continue in a good way, i hope that fans who live off their idol satisfying their greed and uncontrollable passion will go down the drain.

Except for 9 & 10, this is scary crazy stuff. Poor Andy Lau. I’m glad he had the good sense not to allow himself to be emotionally bullied by his “fan.” As for T-ara, I don’t even know them, but after reading about them bullying one of their members in another website, I have to admit that it left a really bad impression on me of them, so I can understand their fans turning away from them.

You’re so right sister, I was so shocked that in Kpop world, having a healthy relationship and being transparent about it is a “scandal” I have to re-read and review what “scandal” meant –> “An action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage.” How will JYJ’s having GFs and acknowledging it in public be regarded as morally and legally wrong?

In my opinion, anything beyond norm is addiction. The question is, who decides and define “the norm”? Coz it’s also culture-based.
Like what sis @maejae said, we don’t hear much of this type of fan services/ sponsorships with our local artists in Phil, but it seems customary in other countries. Expressing one’s adulation is culture-bound. Still some of the cases cited here just went way,way,way beyond reasonable bounds. It’s a pity when “fans” loose their boundaries and grounding with reality, when they distort truths, loose their proprieties and sensibilities, loose their sanity altogether…
Though I play looney a lot, I pray I won’t go to that level, so help me God! Because in reality, anyone among us can just flip anytime. With the loads of stresses & burdens we face and cope up with daily, it’s so easy to loose ourselves totally.
Also there’s peer pressure in fandom besides fanaticism & rivalries. There’s also extensive and intensive manipulations by business entities – they don’t appear as vivid, they remain shadows out there, but the subliminal messages are all over. With the global connections made convenient by technology, men/women are becoming more & more distant physically from each other. And that’s the irony of it. Technology is making us all connected, yet disconnects us too. The distancing phenomenon is becoming more and more gigantic. If we are not mindful of these affairs, we can totally loose ourselves to the world of fantasy and imagination and become split and flip just like what some fans did as cited in the article.
Thus in the spirit of Family-ness in JYJ3 esp in GAPP, let’s do look after each other’s back. Sorry for my long response. Though this should be in ODP, but since I relate more in GAPP, i decided to say my speech here *wink!* Really, this is what i like abt this section. Besides loving JYJ and expressing it all the way we want, we also take good care of each other, and be warm, caring, sensitive to one another. We may play and joke a lot, & be delusional, but behind those are our good intentions of building & nurturing relationships among us. This is the reason behind my bias for this spot… in addition to having fun. We care about relationships and we go out to connect with fellow JYJ lovers. We don’t have to be “cerebral here” [not that we are less] We just need to be ourselves and have fun, build friendships, connect & share our common love for JYJ. No pressure! For me, this kind of cyber-environment allows us to keep ourselves and our fellow JYJ lovers grounded on our realities, and not flip. Lastly, there’s a saying in my profession that says “People who admits they’re getting insane, won’t become one. coz insane people are in complete denial of their insanity or they are not capable of any insight…So let’s continue being the way we are here,happy and loving fans of JYJ… Muah!!

Are we JYJ fans that crazy like everyone ele thinks we are?!
I was reading drama blogs with fan wars with Eun Hye fans as she’s a possible lead actress with Chunnie. I even hear rumors its Goo Hye Sun (from Boys over flowers). But whatever the case, they said us fans are disruptive and hating on any lead girl with Chun. That is not the case! What frustrates me, is why would we bad mouth others,when of course we wouldn’t want to taint our boys image! We like whatever project JYJ does, and that goes for whoever they may act/be wtih! Sure we’re protective of our boys, but not unreasonable! We’re supportive and passionate fans.
Really? I hate fan wars. As for casting, i don’t really make it my business to comment, much more to criticize. I believe i am in no position to do so. I leave the task to the experts – producers, directors, etc. All I care and have great faith of, is that Chunnie will always deliver his best. With Chun and Jae & Junsu, its “EXCELLENCE NO LESS!”
