For the preparations of the new album, there seemed to be a big worry and burden associated with it. “We weren’t nice comers but it felt like we actually were,” the two members said. “We really missed the stage,” says Yunho. As the two of them appeared on stage for the first time for their comeback, they swelled with feelings such as, “I guess I was originally the kind of human being who was meant to be sing on stage.” They also said that after the broadcast had finished, they had been on the verge of tears.
And also more than anything, the two members had to work hard to perfect their harmony and fill the absence of the three members. Yunho wanted to continue to show Dong Bang Shin Gi’s music style in their new album too. A song that could make use of Changmin’s high voice and Yunho’s low voice was necessary, and that was how the song “Why? (Keep Your Head Down” was made to be. There were worries due to the fact that their voices were opposites to each other, but they explained that they were able to create a new colour in their music.
Up until now Changmin was put in many parts of songs when it was five member group, but this time Changmin said he chose the song by finding a way to revive the vocals of Yunho’ s and his. “I wanted to place emphasis on our personalities, an incorporated a song where diverse genres could be heard. This album is one that focuses on personality and harmony,” Changmin said, showing his confidence. There are instruments such as the gaya harp and traditional korean instruments, ballad and R’n’B songs, solos from the two members, that have been incorporated and compiled in this album.
The performance from the two members also turned out to be much more than just a punch. Yunho explained that it was only the two of them, but it didn’t seem like it, they seemed like twins but they weren’t twins, they seemed to have similar moves but it didn’t seem like their concept was to be similar. They wanted to show that the two members can continue with power, and they chose a choreography that expressed a more lively and masculine side of them.
The two members also opened their hearts to us and told us their thoughts on the three members who left the group.
Yunho, “We were waiting for them. But we can’t let Dong Bang Shin Gi be forgotten so we can’t keep waiting for them for 5 years or 10 years. Their opposition with the company has gotten deeper, they have gotten farther away, we also haven’t been able to contact them and it has become a long and continued story. Until this problem can be solved, someone had to protect Dong Bang Shin Gi.
In regards to the question of whether there was a scope of them starting activities as five again, they two members showed us a cautious attitude. Yunho pointed out that, “The problem here is with the three members and their lawsuit in opposition to the company.” He also presented the thought that he couldn’t speak about the circumstances of the situation, but that Dong Bang Shin Gi was a group that was created within SM Entertainment so the three members should settle with the company and come back to them. They vented that the current state of the situation was was frustrating.
Previously, JYJ stated in an interview that in the past they were Dong Bang Shin Gi and even from now on they still were. When we asked about this quote, Changmin spoke up:
“Dong Bang Shin Gi was a team that was design and created by SM from the beginning. The five of us were loved by tons of fans, and we enjoyed the activities we did together. The two of us are not letting this framework end, but we are going to protect it. When birds leave a flock but they still think they are part of it, don’t you think there is some kind of inconsistency there?”
The two members stated that “For us, Dong Bang Shin Gi is the home that we will always return to even if we do solo activities.” Yunho said, “It was after getting this change this time around that we really felt the meaning of Dong Bang Shin Gi and its’ value. Similar to how in order to climb up a high peak it is first necessary to climb down from it, even when ten years or twenty years pass, I think I will remember just how good this period of my life was. The pride I have in Dong Bang Shin Gi will never change.”
Dong Bang Shin Gi will also be restarting their activities in Japan. They will be releasing a single that will include the Japanese versions of “Why? (Keep Your Head Down)” and “Maximum”. From the 25th to 26th, they will be holding a joint concert with other SM singers called “SM Town Live” World Tour which will be held in Tokyo.
Changmin said “We took the opportunity in Japan with the path that BoA had built. That road that we have further cultivated, Girls Generation have walked on it. But I think Girls Generation has experienced more difficulty than us. This is because they have to open up this road for other juniors too.”
Yunho said, “We will thank Girls Generation. Due to their success, we will also go to Japan and show a good result.” With the feeling that they had received encouragement from their juniors, the two members expressed their willpower.
They had their debut in 2004 when they were young teenagers, and they made their way to the top. The boys that were not even able to enjoy the normal days of other teenagers their age, constantly followed by paparazzi and fans, they did not have freedom.
“To say that it wasn’t stressful would be a life,” Yunho said. “I wanted to relax and just drink one cup of coffee but there were a lot of things I couldn’t do.” Saying this, we then asked about experiences with relationships, at which the two members looked at each other and laughed. “Of course we did have relationships. But both of us had to give notice to the company when we were in relationships,” they laughed.
