XIA’s Incredible Press Conference in Sydney, Australia
A bright and cheerful Xia greeted the Media at SBS PopAsia studios wearing a shirt with words to make all the fangirls squeal- ‘Love of my Life’.
After greeting the audience the very first question asked Xia what he thought of Sydney. Answering immediately Xia said Sydney is a very beautiful city, adding that as soon as you see the city from the airplane you know it is beautiful. He was then asked where his favourite place in Sydney is, after visiting Sydney for a holiday in 2010 with fellow JYJ members Jaejoong and Yoochun. Xia explained that despite seeing the Opera House so often in text books and on the TV, when he saw it in person it was so much grander. He added that he also enjoyed doing the Harbour Bridge Climb, and eating both Kangaroo Steak and Crocodile Pizza!
With this being his first ever concert in Australia Xia explained that he wants his audience to feel the same excitement and joy that he feels when he is performing, adding that he hopes it will be a great time for everyone. When asked if he could tell something “Incredible” about himself, Xia said that he hopes the Sydney concert will be an incredible time for both him and the fans. He continued by saying that it is something that he cannot do by himself, it also has to come from the fans- as a fusion of the two energies. Despite the obvious language differences, Xia explained that he doesn’t feel there is much difference between holding a concert in Korea or internationally, as he feels the love from JYJ fans is the same wherever they perform.
After being asked what inspires him to write songs and where his ideas come from Xia said that, as a singer songwriter, he doesn’t have any set rules for writing lyrics or composing and that every song is very different. With dance songs, like ‘Tarantallegra’, he comes up with the beat first and then the lyrics, but with ballad songs like ‘Fallen Leaves’ he comes up with the lyrics first. When discussing his current album ‘Incredible’, Xia explained that the most fun he had on a song was actually the title song- ‘Incredible’. As an upbeat dance song it was targeted for the Korean Summer, as summer makes everyone happy!
Xia was then asked if there were any main differences between performing his own songs in concert and performing his roles in musicals, to which he explained that when he promotes his album and singles as a solo artist it is all about him, but when he performs in a musical with other people it is a very different feeling. Although the excitement is the same, the feeling he gets at the end of each of them is very different.
Talking about his role in the musical Elisabeth, Xia explained that when he first took the role as Death it felt very overwhelming to him, having to portray a character that was beyond his nature. He continued that when he returned to the role he put in a lot of effort to portray the role in a different colour. Xia also took this opportunity to announce that he has taken a role in a new musical titled ‘December’. Which, funnily enough, will begin performances in the coming December!
Xia was then asked about his goals for the future, after having already achieved his goal of becoming recognized as a star throughout Asia (Junsu’s aim in taking the stage name ‘Xia’, shortened from ‘Asia’). Xia started laughing and answered that this question embarrassed him. He said to forget about his being a star- he just wants to be there to perform for every fan around the world. He explained for the rest of 2013 he will be working hard with his new musical ‘December’ and promoting JYJ’s theme song for the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
Leaving a final message for his Australian fans Xia said the he is very much looking forward to the concert and that he hopes that it will be something that he can enjoy with his fans. He continued by saying that he hopes that he will one day have a concert with his fellow JYJ members in Australia and that even though he doesn’t know when this may happen, it is something that they all look forward to.
