Park Yoochun has mastered the Joseon drama and is to become an action star.
JYJ‘s Park Yoochun will be returning to Korean drama on March 5th in the thrilling SBS political drama Three Days. Based on the American television series 24, Three Days chronicles the quest of bodyguard Han Tae Kyung (Yoochun) as he attempts to locate the missing Korean president, in order to safely return him to the Blue House. While 24 focused on a series of events which took place in one day, Three Days examine the seventy-two hour period in which the president must be found. Three Days will air in the slot currently occupied by You Who Came From The Stars.
The Comedic Scholar
While many idol actors have allowed themselves to be pigeonholed as the flower boy or the heartless chaebol, Yoochun has diversified his acting repertoire to include more innovative roles. Although, Yoochun acted in prior roles, his rise to K-drama fame began with the 2010 historical comedy Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Sungkyunkwan Scandal starred Park Min Young as a woman who entered the highest educational institute in the Joseon Dynasty by impersonating a man. The dynamic between Park Min Young’s Kim Yoon Hee and Yoochun’s Lee Sun Joon won over audiences, especially those who did not normally watch period dramas. Yoochun and Park Min Young received critical acclaim for Sungkyunkwan Scandal, which also launched actor Song Joong Ki into stardom. With clever writing and plot twists, Sungkyunkwan Scandal enabled Yoochun to display a diversified emotional range. In 2011, Yoochun starred in the melodrama Miss Ripley. Miss Ripley was loosely based on an actual case in which an academic was accused of fabricating her credentials and defrauding her peers. Yoochun was cast in the role of Song Yoo Hyun, which was a departure from Lee Sun Joon. However, the complexity of the character would later be revisited by Yoochun.
The Time Slip Drama That Paved The Way For ‘You Who Came From The Stars’
Yoochun rocked the track suit in ‘Rooftop Prince’ before Crayon Pop brought them back into fashion.
Rooftop Prince, a 2012 time slip drama starring Yoochun, is widely recognized as one of the most beloved Korean dramas. Rooftop Prince combined elements of fantasy and romantic comedy, serving as precursor for dramas such as You Who Came From The Stars. Yoochun was cast opposite actress Han Ji Min, with the actors playing dual roles as the drama switched between modern day New York and Korea, as well as Joseon Dynasty era Korea. Audiences empathized with the brokenhearted Prince Lee Gak (Yoochun) as he attempted to assimilate into modern Korean society through the aid of Park Ha (Han Ji Min). Along with his tracksuit-clad friends from the past, Prince Lee Gak remains one of the most interesting Korean drama characters.
Melodramas Are A Testimony To Acting Ability
Yoochun followed the success of Rooftop Prince with the tear jerking melodrama I Miss You. Yoochun and Yoon Eun Hye brilliantly portrayed an ill-fated high school couple who continued to be haunted by a series of events into adulthood. At the point in which Han Jung Woo relocates his high school sweetheart Lee Soo Yeon (Yoon Eun Hye), she has assumed a separate identity to disavow knowledge of her past. With his portrayal of Han Jung Woo, Yoochun solidified his capability as an actor capable of portraying almost any role.
Yuchun is a new actor and he is already challenging himself to take on a variety of roles. One way to not get typecast.
I hope Yuchun will take on a role in a romantic comedy for his next project … or any roles that will show his comedic side. Still like him best in RTP. Will have to wait after he served his MS.
Hope Jae will also do a drama soon. …….. Vampire Jae or Chiaki Senpai Jae (Korean version)??
Ah! Right sis! jae is fit as chiaki senpai!! 😆
Still amazed how he can nailed all those roles from scholar LSJ to heartbroken HJW..even some proper actors are afraid to act in Melodrama or being comical..way to go Park Yoochun..wishing u all the best in action drama this time..Fighting!
It is so smart of YC to be an actor that can play a variety of roles instead of being typecasted. I feel these type of actors are more in demand. Being this type of actor is surely great for the growth of his acting career.
