SM’s oversea localization strategy, should have its front reexamined
Since their stage at an award ceremony of an Acting Awards show in 2010 [T/N: 2010 KBS Drama Awards], the image of JYJ(Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, Kim Junsu) has disappeared from South Korean broadcasts. After that, September this year [2014] was the first time JYJ reflected their image on broadcasting stations again. It had taken them almost approximately 4 years. JYJ’s appearance on a broadcast, however, was not on a broadcasting regular program; they had gotten to be merely on a relay broadcast only where they were on the ‘2014 Incheon Asian Games’ opening ceremony stage. There was also a controversy that had not permit this stage from the beginning. Even though JYJ had done activities for about 2 years as the honorary ambassadors for the Asian Games. With the controversy of the unjust, external pressure, the organizing committee had decided on their opening ceremony appearance in a hurry for that day. But their [T/N: IAGOC’s] promise from its outset was not upheld. JYJ had ascended at the opening ceremony, but that was half the promised performances. Which attribute to them having not ascend onto the closing ceremony stage.
Such things are, in fact, common for JYJ. JYJ has come to continuously carry on with things similar after applying for an injunction to suspend the validity of their exclusive contract with SM Entertainment. It was especially a taboo, ‘to be invisible’, to appear with the name JYJ on the 3 terrestrial stations. SM and an entertainment industry association [T/N: KFPCAI] which others big entertainment management companies held key roles in, had sent an official document formally to every broadcasting stations. Because of this JYJ’s schedule to appear on many broadcasts was cancelled from the beginning. It was not only broadcasting stations, but culture industry-related organizations/associations, as well, that grasps their situation, avoided JYJ and its members.
In May 2013, JYJ member Park Yoochun’s <Yoo Jae-suk & Kim Won-hee’s Come to Play> appearance was shockingly cancelled. It is even said the concept was to be with his MBC drama <Miss Ripley> cast members only. His appearance before the day of recording to be on KBS2 TV <Win Win> had been cancelled too. Jeju KBS’s <Wishing Jeju To Become One of the 7 Wonders, Special Live Broadcast> were notified of JYJ’s appearance cancellation 4 days prior to its broadcast. They were not free in the Republic of Korea.
In July 2013, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) issued a correction order against SM, to not obstruct/interfere with JYJ’s business activities. However, despite their legal battle having ended, JYJ’s broadcasting activities in South Korea are still not easy. They have not appear on any broadcasts. That past February [2013], a theater screening of JYJ’s documentary was suddenly cancelled, and even the organization to plan on airing it on cable & satellite TV channels was cancelled abruptly. Its trailer was already out, too. They had ascended to be on the Asian Games opening ceremony, but it doesn’t seem easy to resume JYJ’s broadcasting activities in South Korea.
The example of JYJ was an unprecedented case. It is because they had filed a lawsuit suing against a big entertainment management company. The lawsuit action was not easy. It is the reason why their domestic activities are difficult to be seen on the map with a big entertainment management company’s.
Look at the example of EXO-M. There were members of EXO who have been around for 3 years yet withdrew back to back. Following Kris, Luhan had filed a lawsuit that claimed the invalidity of his exclusive contract. He pointed out that there seems to be the growing problem of maladjustment due to being from overseas; but as for the origin [of the problem], the contradiction of the ‘incubating system’ is an object of criticism. The ‘trainee incubating system’ –that is considered as a distinctive entertainment management company system from South Korea only– has administered a lot of time and efforts [into its trainees]. Also, there is even a large aspect where there is demand for sacrifice from every individuals. We shall see how a well-fitted system for Koreans will work out.

SM’s localization strategy should have a reexamination of its front. The entertainment management system of South Korea created the ‘K-Pop Hallyu phenomenon’ in the unusual conditions of South Korea. But it is very obvious for there to be limits in applying with a universal system. No, this doesn’t apply to simply the members who are only from overseas. The record of lawsuits by Kris and Luhan should be a priority in the effort to improve the contradictions of South Korea’s entertainment management system for those in isolation. There has to be limits to the continuation of the ‘K-Pop”s Hallyu [Wave] with its foundation on the painful endurance[/suffering] and fear of young people in South Korea no longer. It must be accepted that this was an unusual phenomenon based on contradictions from one time.

[REVIEW] Why K-pop idols flee from their groups via Korea JoongAng Daily

KFPCAI consists of many leechers, it will take years, new legislatives and hardcore measures to mend Korean entertainment industry. I’m happy with JYJ’s situation now. They can live by their own by their own terms..and since money is not a question mark anymore, I am so glad 😀
I am happy with JYJ’s situation too ^^ They glow and that’s what I love to see the most ~ they are so damn happy…
five of five stars for you, my friend..:)
for years i tried to understand. for years, i tolerated. for years, i supported JYJ. but now…. thank you Junsu for your teeshirt… dear karma, i have a list of people you missed. it is now happening. but still, i am thinking… where is the fairness? where is the justice? no word of JYJ appearing in japan. nothing on south korean big networks. JYJ will soon do their military duties. i will miss them terribly. i want a miracle please. but i will patiently wait. the heavens are watching over our boys. i can feel that.
thank you very much rilanna.

THANK YOU SO MUCH RILANNA DEAR… FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND HARD WORK, deepbowdown…..
It’s true SM has failed, but to me SM is a company that has lost their once respect and dignity due to the outbreak of unfair contracts. I do think SM can never be seen has a reputable company, in short SM was never good company to work for and its shame that there are some that condone them and praise them knowing full well what kind of company SM is, I see if they choose to support SM, they are no better. Personally those decided to leave SM, will find it hard, but I tell you what they made the right choice for their sanity and professional freedom
Matter fact JYJ hardwork and artistic freedom does not need broadcast, you only have to watch them to know their aura, wit, act and singing is something you are in awe with and unforgettable. In just two month of their own promotions, they have excel and been notice considerable throughout, now what group can do this without no real televised entertainments and broadcast promotion. I hope they are resting and hopefully continue JYJ promotion because even though they may decide to singularly do their own thing, I hope they can continue to do more concerts and see the three more because they are certainly funny together and soon they will go in the army, 😥 I hoping. Love and respect JYJ forever😘❤️❤️❤️
Despite all sabotages, Jaechunsu manage to soar high. I’m so glad they had that warrior spirit to fight the seemingly unbeatable foe for their freedom and to become their own masters. Once they left SM they show us that they are the best in every fields they choose. The awesome wealth that follows is an added bonus. But the real price is the freedom to explore their artistry and to do what their heart desire. Just like JJ said in his instagram:
“What am I good at?
There are so many things I want to try
What I must show, what I truly want to do.
What is important..
I will just try everything.
there are still so many things I should experience”
Without leaving the prison which is SM in every essence, they would never be able to do that.
Soar high, up to where SM is no longer matter.
*agree*
JYJ will always stand out as brave people who had the courage to take on an unfair system; even at the risk of losing their lively hood! To those who are their juniors, if you have belief in yourself, a good support system around you and can withstand outside pressure; you can succeed against the odds. JYJ has proven this ❤
Each time we bleed , we recover , we fight. The war we are not afraid , the defence we put up is great. The attack we proved .. The sucess we received. We now rejoice. We should.
Fans all over the world, we have lived with our heads up. Amazing bunch of people with one heart , one mind.
JYJ forever our pledge ❤️
‘SM and an entertainment industry association [T/N: KFPCAI] which others big entertainment management companies held key roles in, had sent an official document ~formally~ to every broadcasting stations.’
How the hell can it be ~formally~? This kind of pissed me off.
Sometimes though, when I actually think about it, as much as JYJ is now free to do whatever they want, they still exude the feels that they want to perform and share the musics on TV. Just look how happy they were performing at Incheon Asia Games Opening
I cried when i saw them on broadcast in IAGO. Their smile make me happy. They tried all their best. I admire the way that they overcome any obstacles together. It make me more and more love them. They are real idol who i must learn.
Wish they alway happy and sucess.
Love all ❤
Thank CJES
One word about SM, “Karma”. This year alone 2 of their artist have petitioned to end their contracts. And being blocked in music programs doesn’t mean that JYJ are not doing well. For the last 5 years, they were earning more in terms of income. But more importantly, they are able choose which project to work on.
Still, I hope the “ban” will end soon. 🙂
Meanwhile something intrigues and worries me: their enlistment. https://jyj3.net/2014/08/03/news-140803-details-of-jyjs-upcoming-army-enlistment-are-still-unconfirmed/ They’ll be missing in action and to SM it will be easier to make people forget them. Or at least try. My memory is better than their tries.
Thank you so much rilanna of JYJ3!!
Will always love & respect JYJ ~ ❤️❤️❤️
My hope is that the fans who will love and support JYJ best will never accept the current status quo as “good enough.” Saying their current situation is “good enough” translates to “so I don’t really have to do anything else” for JYJ to finally be freed from this terrifically unjust situation that has been so monumentally difficult and heartbreaking for them over the last 4 years. THEY want this unjust ban to be over, make no mistake. They continue to be plagued by it, it’s terribly frustrating for them. Yes, they are doing their best to keep their heads above water in a ridiculously competitive industry where every other artist has free and unrestrained access to all parts of their industry but JYJ are working hard (and smart!) and overcoming the obstacles of SM’s dirty dealings every single day, things that we don’t even necessarily hear about but they are continuing to happen and it’s all been killingly hard for JYJ and their management. So please lets not let up, saying “well, they’re doing fine now – look they’re smiling in the photo!” because that only tells half the story – that shows how brave and stubbornly resilient they are. As someone just quoted above, “Each time we bleed , we recover , we fight.” That must be JYJ’s motto! Let’s continue to do all we can, get the word out that JYJ deserve to be free of this ban and we, as fans, demand that they are.
A special word to the international fans of JYJ: we can do this. We can make this happen in a way that no one else can because Korea CARES about world opinion and becoming a world class creative and economic power. K-Pop is at the very forefront of their PR campaign to become a top player. From all the signs in fact they are well on their way towards this goal. But this unjust ban, this “trainee system” and the systematic cheating of its artists by SME – this is the Korean entertainment communities’ dirty little secret. And obviously, with articles like the one above now starting to be routinely published, that secret is OUT. We can do this – we can make this ban end. Let’s just not give up now.
I agree with you. The IAG case is a perfect example how international fans can put enough pressure to make a difference. We should keep doing things like that. Writing to SK government offices stating our dissapoinment. We can also write to their embassies in each of our respected countries.
After reading this article, I’m reminded of one of my favorite songs:
“The Impossible Dream”
from MAN OF LA MANCHA (1972)
music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause
And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star
I believe with the inalienable talents that the members of JYJ possess, they will persevere no matter what comes their way. They are too strong, too smart, and too gifted to lose out to SM. The fans have to remind themselves all the time, this is a very special trio of young men. Young men who have so much to offer. We are the lucky ones, because we know just how talented they are. And we will be there for them no matter what SM or their cadres try and do.
PLEASE REMEMBER — THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM. PEACE!
Since that summer in 2009, I know that SM has lost its way. I don’t know how these wicked people work to cover SM’s decay, but they can’t do that no more. They will surely be in the depths of their failure if they never learn.
On the other hand, I am so grateful that JYJ decided to leave. SM keeps pouring zillions to promote their artists without listening to their aspirations, while JYJ get to buy new houses, cars, and even build a hotel. I’m not saying that their struggle is easy. They cry blood, but they wipe their tears and fight again and again. God, these men are so admirable! They are the true definition of dream fighters. They are my eternal inspiration.
They are my inspiration, too, Sofia. I loved what you wrote. 🙂
I like ur opinion on JYJ so much.
Good opinion.
The kind of response from each of us just proves that we all know what we want and what to do when we chance on any opportunity to get the ban off , and see SM blacklisted even in their own home ground.
I don’t know if time is on our side but we are definitely NOT even near giving up anything after all these years of fight.
And yes, thanks CJES for sticking with us on this ❤️
Rilanna, thanks for taking the time to translate this article for us! You’re absolutely amazing, seriously. ♥
I’m honestly glad that JYJ left SM because they’re free (well relatively) to do what they actually want to do, whether that’d be acting or singing or anything else. But there’s still so much to be done and I hope we’ll be able to help JYJ be able to do broadcasting activities freely as well as to keep them along with any future idols from being shoved into the shadows as SM has attempted to do.
Also I’m really happy to hear that someone in the Korean news is willing to say something about this as well. The media networks usually keep quiet about the ban that JYJ is facing but with the recent lawsuits and the sudden drop of SNSD’s Jessica, SM’s dealings with their artists and trainees have been coming up more and more into the spotlight.
butterfliesarefree2! this song is one of my favs too since I’ve listened a perfect version from Elvis when I was about 10 or 12..and lately I’m imagining Junsu singing it and dying to hear it from him really..and also think the lyrics are perfect and very well fit Junsu’s/ JYJ’s brave hearts..
@zey
My favorite singer and his version…I too would love to hear Junsu perform this. 😉
JYJ is truly an inspiration to me…when i see them i am reminded that i can reach my dream despite all opposition. Am not Korean so SM idea of ruining them clearly failed as their fame is global…i am praying for you JYJ with a sincere heart and i believe God is on your side. Love you and fighting.
